I was just coming to suggest The Diamond Age.
re: not near future - while we haven't reached the level of nanotech the novel espouses, a lot of other portions of the novel are current or near future; kindles, BLS, corporate oligarchy - pretty OK for being published in 1995

This. I fear no program's --version command except java, ssh, and python.
They should make a game show there you have one chance to get the --version syntax right or you're kicked; I would watch that.
