Retired and discovering life and myself all over again…
These two sg pieces were another experiment with the engraving pen, inspired by lines of poetry written by Deborah Miranda, in her collection The Alter for Broken Things.

This piece was designed by an old friend who passed away. I finished it for his parter of many decades in the weeks following his death.

One of six plates made at the local pottery studio. I felt rushed through the design phase of this class, but I look forward to making more

Seriously, the wildlife is just a little too comfortable over here! 🥰

This is my third piece, and I’m still learning. My original design had 3 hinge lines and had to be adjusted. I definitely will plan better if I make this design again.

It’s true, I come here for the news that runs through my feed, but I also need a moment between horrifying headlines, so here are Ani and Quinby while I coffee and scroll. 🥰

Once asked if “when I hang out with my [anti-fascist] friends, we just sit around being angry and sad,” I couldn’t explain it well, but there is such joy in being surrounded by people who care enough about others to be angry right now. It keeps me from drowning in disappointment about the rest.

I still haven’t figured out how to share anything of length here, but if you’re looking for inspiration this morning… #ki #kin #purposefullife

"Washington has become the court of Nero, an incendiary emperor, submissive courtiers, and a jester high on ketamine in charge of purging the civil service.

This is a tragedy for the free world, but it is first and foremost a tragedy for the United States."

Sometimes, when the world rushes and clamors too much, it is my camera that grounds me. I know I should pay attention, but I also need to quiet the noise. Please share one of your quiet moments in the comments ♥️

My brother actually made me take one those tests one time…predictably I ended up on the axis graph somewhere south and left of Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, but I think the orcas get me… 🤔 🤷‍♀️

DOGE, the cuts, the tax cuts all rely on the perception that the US government apparatus is just dead weight getting in the way of business and people's lives.

The US needs a movement to reassert the idea that public service is a noble calling.

I wanted to use this space to mostly share the art and new skills I am learning in retirement (these may by necessity start to include survival strategies, but isn’t that what art essentially is?) Anyways, I took some paintings out on the sidewalk to dry in deeply cold temps yesterday.

I thought I’d write a bit more in retirement than I have, and I enjoyed the publishing process more than I thought I would. These are a few of the poems I worked through until they felt “finished.” I hope to take a few others to that point this year.

I enjoyed this simple pottery class and would love to go back for another.

Playing with water colors - I painted various papers and put together these quick collages as gifts for a small gathering of friends on Festivus.

In 2024, I started a stained glass class that I enjoy immensely. It has also influenced some of the painting I’ve dabbled in this winter.

The way time slows in retirement is allowing me a different perspective on how I think, learn, and create. I’m currently enjoying learning new skills to renovate my dining area and kitchen.
