Love this Alaskan centric comic about using air quality index (AQI) to make air quality related health decisions. Comic created by JUst Solutions to Impacts of Climate Exposures for Health in Alaska (JUSTICE-HIA) project team. For the full guide see alaskawildfires.org #airquality

Yeah I love them! This is what they look like at 14 days old. They’re about a centimeter long. They grow up so fast!

Live in Alaska and wonder what your current air quality is, especially with all the wildfires in the Interior and across the border in Canada? Check out Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s real-time air quality index map. experience.arcgis.com/experience/8...

Anyone know what this beach find is? Found it near Pasagshak River State Recreational Site in Kodiak, Alaska.

Found an old photo of this polycephalic threespine stickleback egg that was in one of my clutches a few years ago. Polycephaly means having more than one head, in this case with two heads the stickleback is considered bicephalic. This defect happened prior to any experimental treatment. #stickleback

Packrafting season has begun! New Alpacka Mage is gonna take some getting used to with its secondary edge & tippy feeling. Took a dip x2, right when I got on the water & then when trying to get off a rock. Before this last float I had only ever swam once unintentionally over my years of rafting.

More fun teaching kids about fish today. Today we had anadromous and freshwater threespine stickleback to show off. The kids were surprised to learn that all the fish were fully mature adult fish and that the freshwater stickleback were in fact not the anadromous stickleback’s babies. #stickleback

Been teaching 4th graders about fish in the Chester Creek Watershed at Westchester Lagoon last 2 days. Their wonder & awe helps renew mine. Since the program is near a popular path in Anchorage it also gets the interest of many community members and it’s such a pleasure chatting with locals too.

Proof of my Kennecott Mine print. Gonna carve out a few more details but overall so giddy about how it looks! #linocut #blockprinting #reliefprint #printmaking #kennecottmine

Mussels & other bivalves filter feed and in doing so can filter pollutants from the ocean by accumulating them in their tissues #invertefest If you too love mussels, I’ve got several earrings I’ve made with mussels from Juneau & Cordova, AK available for sale at stickleandpawdesign.com

Today a friend & I rescued a mallard from some ravens that were going after her. She’ll be dropped off at Bird TLC in Anchorage in the morning. Luckily just scratched up so she should recover with some rest & relaxation. If you ever find an injured bird in Alaska visit www.fws.gov/alaska-bird-...

Added Pittsburgh at the request of @rayinscience.bsky.social to my climate comparison plot that originally just included Anchorage, Juneau and Cork. Juneau is still soooo rainy but I didn’t know that Pittsburgh had so much rain too, albeit a drop in the bucket in comparison to Juneau. #R #ggplot

Comparing the climate of Alaska to the ancestral homeland for reasons. Guess Ireland isn’t quite as rainy as Juneau and even Anchorage is wetter some months! #R #ggplot2

Working on laying down the lines for a Kennecott Mine block print. I did a 9”x12” version of this previously but a place as cool as Kennecott Mine deserves to be commemorated in a larger format 18”x24” print. This is the largest print I’ve made yet! #kennecottmine #printmaking #reliefprint #linocut

This block print I made inspired by a camping trip last summer is seriously making me crave an evening snuggled up in a sleeping bag. #printmaking #linocut #reliefprint

Do cruise ships in Nome impact air quality, specifically the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), in Nome, AK? While there was a significant increase in PM2.5 when cruises were in port the average air quality index was good both when cruises were and weren’t in port. #R #ggplot2 #emoGG

Ever wonder how crude oil impacts threespine stickleback? In these photos you can see fish exposed to oil (on the right) have severe swelling (edema), smaller eyes and swim bladders, and jaw deformities. While not pictured here, oil also causes spinal defects. #science #research #toxicology #phd
