It’s basically like a fire tornado/hurricane (without the rain). Even something as small as a cigarette thrown from a car window or a spark from landscaping or construction equipment can set these fires off.

TLDR: when you have a fire fanned by hurricane force Santa Ana winds into a densely populated area that hasn’t had rain since March 2024, embers travel quickly and far and can light up a whole neighborhood in minutes.
