The dark color is from melanin in the spore walls. The slime mold uses the melanin the same way people do: to avoid sunburn. Two evolutionary groups have very high spore wall melanin: STEMONITIDS (like Comatricha, Stemonitis, & Brefeldia) & PHYSARIDS (like Fuligo, Physarum, & Didymium)
