Ugh. The clash of reading too much news fresh after the arrival of spring seed catalogs. Related: I’m gonna need a bigger garden😵‍💫. Seriously Aurora/Denver friends, I’d really like to find 5-10,000 sq ft of unused garden space to share crop. Leads appreciated.

Sharing pictures of Teri on social media has been really difficult for me, but I’m setting that aside for now, because it’s time you got to know a little bit about her, and be reminded that the world is worse off with her loss. Please take a few minutes to read the alt descriptions. 💔
Very faded, out of focus picture of two almost-grown kids, obviously smitten with each other. If you are of a certain age and could see this image clearly, you would instantly know by our hair that it was taken in the late 70’s. 1978 to be exact. One of the first photos of Teri and I taken shortly after we met, during our first semester at West Texas State University.

Four years today since Teri, my wife and life partner of 41 years, was lost to traffic violence. She was hit and killed like so many others-attempting to cross a state highway right in the heart of our city. In one of the many cruel twists to this story, she died right in front of the hospital,1/9

In addition to this being the last photo I took of her smiling, it’s also significant for what is in the background. It’s the white stucco chimney and serving bar for a wood fired pizza oven, a key part of Keithsbikefort. Bicycle people have been an important part of my life for a long time. Teri would usually just roll her eyes and go watch college basketball when I would go for a ride with friends. As the bike fort became more and more of a local bike rider hangout, it was delightful for me to watch her fall in love with our local bunch of rag tag riders almost as much as I had. Nothing brought me more joy than seeing her floating in the pool after a tough workday, while happily sharing her sacred space with a pile of red dirt plastered gravel riders. We were building a greenhouse for the bike fort and worked for weeks to cover up this 5000 cubic foot hole one shovelful of dirt at a time. By this point, everyone at the hospital was beyond exhausted, and I was astounded by her ability to shovel dirt after what she was dealing with on a daily basis. I always joked that if I was in the hospital, I wouldn’t even hear about it from my wife-she took patient confidentiality as serious as any human who ever set foot on the planet. But if you knew her personally, you know this look on her face meant business. I can only imagine the heartache and frustration she was putting deep in the ground as we shoveled. This is the last picture I have of us together, and the only way you can tell it was us is because I’m telling you. While Teri didn’t ride bikes much, we both enjoyed going out for short cruises around our small town on the tandem. This time proved to be especially important as the pandemic wore on and on and on. I'm also a big fan of #allbikesarecargobikes Best resource for me over the years-hands down-is to have a wrap of 'velcro tape' with me. It weighs less than a good fart and stores inconspicuously around the seatpost. Never know what you might need to tie down!
