My favorite time of the year is when my students submit their reflective comic. This is an assignment that asks each student to create a two page comic that explains (explicitly or implicitly) what they learned about reading by taking this course. The results are always fantastic.

Giving the benefit of the doubt to these MAHA ghouls, this *could be* a well-intentioned but dangerous rhetorical stance. The best was to feed a baby is whatever way you can feed the baby. To suggest that one way is best will lead some to waste time and effort, when a healthy option is available.

I was *just* thinking about this as I walked to work this morning. I can't think of another public space that private owners are expected to take care of other than the sidewalk. Could you imagine how awful it would be if home and business owners were required to clear the streets by their property?
Winter is one of the best times to educate people about car-centric policies because when it's snowy you can clearly see how little our cities care about anyone not traveling in a car. Even if you're not some activist, someone walking in winter can appreciate how much an unplowed sidewalk sucks.
This was a choice, not by the person walking but by the decision makers who refuse to prioritize them.

Awesome. AI hype is just turtles all the way down, but the turtles are increasingly sleazier grifters.
They’re not really PhD students, or if they are they invent things. This guy found a couple who seem determined to be victims of AI shaming, which is interesting in itself, but I’ve seen others whose whole deal is productivity but their tips are bad and clearly not from a recent student.

I would push it further, too, and argue that knowing facts doesn’t mean you understand even *the facts* themselves. A lot of what tech people call “understanding” feels more akin to recall or memory than knowing or understanding.
Lying half awake, staring at the hospital ceiling after seeing an AI bro condescending to @kathryntewson.bsky.social, I drifted off thinking about cognition, reasoning, and understanding.

I can tell that engineers designed our roster management software because it let's me sort by class year, but arranges the classes alphabetically: First-Year, Junior Senior, Sophomore.

Closed out my comics class by having #UIC's own @robotswithcoffee.bsky.social come through and talk about the life of a comics creative. He ran through a lot of DIY suggestions for getting your ideas out into the world, and it was great. Highly recommend checking out work, if you haven't already.

I don't know. I've been teaching since 2006 and I have never seen someone pretend to be disabled to get accommodations. I mean that literally: I cannot think of a single instance where someone was trying to game the system.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

I think I would rather read an interesting essay riddled with grammatical complications than a bland, mechanically competent essay. An essay with something to say that needs structural help is always more interesting than an easy read that contributes nothing to the conversation.

I wonder if part of the problem is that Universities started adding departments in subjects that have real-world job titles (business, accounting, nursing). More traditional programs (philosophy, art, history) are then seen as extraneous for finding a job.
If we are to solve the funding crisis facing universities, and the crisis of trust in expertise, we have to work tirelessly to fight this nonsense on two fronts: 1) you can't get a degree in Madonna Studies and 2) but it would be good if you could.

In regards to the Oklahoma State situation: there are no amount of rubrics or pedagogical policy that can prevent this from happening to you. You can be as clear as you want; if a bad-faith actor wants to use your class as part of the culture war, they will.
The only prevention is unionization.

I used to expect that students would not only write their own essays, but write them competently. Competency was part of the grade. Now, I get excited when it's clear they at least tried to write something, regardless of quality.

I find myself compelled to grade students who write essays that miss the expectations for the assignment more leniently when it was clear that they wrote the essay themselves.
At least they tried to write something, even if it's not the most effective.
