Charles IX and Henri of Navarre from the book Queen Margot. Charles' expression looks soft and amused while Henri, joyful and laughing, seems to be talking about something funny. The palette is golden, their attitude is calm, everything is at peace, at least for now.

Two kings on a hunt... Each with a different goal

Two characters from the book Queen Margot, the king of France Charles IX and the king of Navarre Henry. They’re wearing 16th century clothes in a red palette. Both characters are holding their weapon, an arquebus for Charles and a dagger for Henry. Charles smiles lovingly at him, clinging to his arm while Henry’s face is more neutral. They’re looking at each other despite avoiding each other’s eyes. These weapons were used in the book either to threaten (Charles threatened Henry with the arquebus) or to save ( Henry saved Charles’ life with his dagger). Despite everything, Charles is looking for Henry’s affection and loyalty while Henry has views on his throne. They’re definitely not hunting the same thing.

This is a comic illustrating a small scene from the book Queen Margot from Dumas. King Charles IX of France retains king Henry of Navarre in his appartements and tries to force him to convert to catholicism after ordering the St Bartholomew massacre. The room is lit from the fires in the city, making the page look red. "You have to understand me, Henriot!" Asks the king. "I understand, sire." Replies Henry. "Well ?" "Well, sire", I do not see why the king of Navarre should not do what so many gentlemen and poor folks have done. For if they all die, poor unfortunates, it is because the same terms have been proposed to them which your Majesty proposes to me, and they have refused, as I refuse." Charle's expression changes into a fierce and savage one. "What!" Yells Charles, gripping his arm. "Do you believe that I have taken the troubles to offer the mass to those whose throats we are cutting yonder?"

He’s holding his dead dog close to him, enraged but unable to scream and realizing he’s also going to die from the same thing.

Another Reine Margot illustration, here is La Mole drawn on a text from Erasmus "The Praise of Folly" from 1511
The character La Mole from La Reine Margot (Dumas) holding a flower (hawthorn) and resting his head on his hand. He's a dark haired man with blue eyes wearing white clothes with some golden embroidery lining his collar and sleeves, a red coat with a black collar rested on his shoulder and a black hat with a white feather. He looks lost in thought, smiling a little. The background is a page from "The Praise of Folly" from Erasmus, specifically a small text about forgiving friends and lovers and being blind to their imperfections narrated from the personification of Folly. This book was important to the Protestant Reformation as it is criticises the Church, while the flower La Mole holds supposedly bloomed during Saint Barthelemy. Of course all of this holds a meaning, since La Mole forgave his friend Coconnas for attempting to murder him several times this night as he was protestant, and Coconnas a catholic. I also chose this text as the folly of love is strongly related to La Mole and Coconnas and their troubles, as Cupido is mentioned as the father and creator of all bonds.

Another illustration about La Reine Margot because I’m obsessed with them
The characters Coconnas (a red haired, tall and strong bearded man) and La Mole (dark haired, with a small mustache and white clothes) from La Reine Margot ( Alexandre Dumas ). Both of them are fighting, as you can see Coconnas almost embracing La Mole threateningly in his tense arms with a furious look on his face. He’s almost gripping the clothes on La Mole’s back with one hand, while the other holds a dagger ready to strike. Coconnas bleeds from his chest, while La Mole bleeds from his shoulder. La Mole looks frightened but stared right back into Coconnas’ eyes. They’re about to fall, as La Mole is already losing his balance.

Became obsessed with Dumas' La Reine Margot. Bon appétit
This is a comic about two characters from the book La Reine Margot (Queen Margot), Coconnas, a red-haired and hot-headed catholic noble man, and de La Mole, a dark haired protestant. In this scene that takes place during St Barthelemy, Coconnas is the first to draw blood by stabbing de La Mole with a dagger while yelling "Touché!", and de La Mole is quick to respond with his blade by slashing his cheek. At first, the scene is in grey/blueish tones - it's night, and the characters can't recognize each other at first. But then, La Mole yells "Lâche!" (Coward!), and Coconnas recognizes the man he sought to kill the chapter before, but also the man who was his friend before the beginning of the massacre. At this sight, Coconnas enrages. Here we see de La Mole's reaction to Coconnas' agression. He seems almost trapped, one against many, retrieving into the shadows of a corridor while swords are pointed at him. His shoulder's hurt, blood drips from his wound and his hair.

Feur and quoi are uhh "fighting" on top of each other (still in a very respectful way and clothed mind you). Feur is on top of him holding him in his arms, while Quoi puts his hand on Feur’s lips. Ah, yes- rivalry.

This is my character Feur ( I really wish he was named something serious. Alas I am silly) in his roughly sketched musketeer outfit. The Count of Quoi (who belongs to dei_pulsar) is blushing at the sight at ... well he’s not looking into feur’s eyes, who’s sitting quite close to him with a loose shirt. Young man, Feur’s eyes are up there, not in his shirt.
