Not for nothing, but it's such a classic piece of the conservative playbook to simply propose an inane question and then back of with "I'm just asking questions!"

I’m heartened to hear that students hate this too. But they’re using them, which means they feel pressure to do so. This is fixable, but will require a concerted and coordinated effort among institutions of higher education - and high schools as well. It’s a long road, but a crucial one. /fin

Obviously, the cost of higher education is out of control and out of reach for so many people without going into lifelong debt. This is clearly why the conversation has turned in this direction. But we’ve entered a new level of darkness when students *completely* forgo the purpose of education.

Hearing that students feel pressured to use LLMs to complete coursework means specifically that we have failed to communicate this core value of education. That’s our fault, not theirs. By framing education in such stark financial terms, students can’t possible understand why they’re really there.

When we frame higher education as a concrete means to an end - i.e., I can get X career if I complete Y degree at Z institution, we ignore that a fundamental aspect of education is learning how to think for yourself, learning how to assess information, and communicating those things.

The discussion has focused on what kind of career can you have if you pay $x for a college education. However - although finding a career that can support the type of life you want to live is obviously very important, to me, the primary value of college is to learn how to think and how to learn.
