It was a memoir about growing up and surviving a terrible mother, set against an ancient Greek play about children killing their terrible mother, until I was ready to cut her off and thereby “kill” her. Psychologically, of course. But now he's gone. My “good” parent was complicated, our relationship was loving but complex. Before he died my father had made the transition from Idol to Human Being in my eyes. I'm grateful for that, that I got to see him and recognize him as both capable of harm and full of love. I wrote a whole draft, had a complete plan. I'm starting over." A collaged page of comics. The text reads "A brief summary of Electra: a story about the tension between Justice and Taboo, a tale of family dysfunction with few survivors. It starts off-stage and over a decade ago, with Helen of Troy... Helen and Clytemnestra are sisters, their brothers Castor and Pollux are the deified Gemini Twins. Helen was married to Menelaus, her sister Clytemnestra was married to his brother Agamemnon. When Helen ran off to Troy, Agamemnon was put in charge of the military force that would siege the city until they brought her back. Except they couldn't get out of port. The winds were bad, nonexistent. So Agamemnon tricked his wife into bringing their daughter Iphigenia to their military encampment on the shore. Where his own child was sacrificed. A favorable breeze, at last. Ten years later, Agamemnon returns triumphant. And Clytemnestra promptly kills him in the bath, some say with an ax, for murdering their daughter. Justice served and sin committed. They have other children, and their son Orestes is now honor-bound to avenge the death of this father. By committing the ultimate act of horror and taboo – killing his mother. But Clytemnestra has a new husband, Aegisthus. Together they move to prevent the revenge-killing and Orestes taking his rightful place on the throne. Orestes is banished to live with his “friend” Pylades. And for good measure his other sister Electra is shipped off to the countryside and married to a poor but honorable peasant. No offspring of hers will be able to raise and army against Aegisthus and Clytemnestra."

My Da passed away suddenly at his home on Friday evening, after spending a happy day puttering and playing horseshoes. He lived life on his own terms right to the end, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Happy May Day/Beltane! I pulled the 7 of Swords for this season. Sometimes people (in power, especially) tell lies and contradictions for the sole purpose of sowing chaos and inciting us to waste time unpacking them. Stay focused, stay diligent, stay united.
