Comparing these effects with existing results from the literature on the electoral effects of immigration suggests that the contribution of the manufacturing decline is only slightly smaller than the contribution of immigration.

The manufacturing decline coincides with the rise of far-right populist parties, not only in Austria, but in most Western democracies. Consequently, the far-right experiences particularly strong support from workers negatively affected by structural change.
