I'm sorry but this whole thing makes me feel insane. Let's just be real: we stole basic independence from generations of kids and teenagers by intentionally making our cities deadly + impossible to travel outside a car, and now corporations are selling a worse version of it back to them at a price.
The Teens Are Taking Waymos Now
Alphabet’s self-driving car company launches what it hopes will be lucrative individual teen accounts—and maybe a whole lot of social change in the process.

Especially since unlike the very public spectacle we got with grok, this could happen without much public awareness.
very cool that society is moving in this direction when, based on what we've learned today, it would take just a little bit of tweaking to turn everyone's fake ai girlfriends into hitler incarnate

biggest thing that stands out to me from the oregon transportation bill debacle: HB 2025 was a serious effort to charge road users the full cost of road maintenance, and it collapsed under its own weight. vindication of the @strongtowns.org view of america’s unsustainably overbuilt infrastructure
America's Growth Ponzi Scheme
The American pattern of development creates the illusion of wealth. Today we are in the process of seeing that illusion destroyed…and with it the prosperity we have come to take for granted.

In all the coverage of P4A since its implementation, I’ve been surprised to see very little about the families who benefit from the program. Now, they’re speaking out (along with county commissioners and other advocates).

The savvy will scoff, but I am completely serious about this. Congressional Dems should introduce a constitutional amendment to limit the pardon power and force votes on it whenever they can. Dem presidential wannabes should endorse the idea. Blue states should signal support.

My favorite fact about the NYC subway is that there are way more daily riders (about 4 million) than the number of people who fly in the US out of all airports every day (~2.5 million). The scale is hard to get a grasp on.
Max capacity passengers per hour:
* Boring Co’s Vegas Loop: 4,500
* NYC subway 6 train: 105,000

118 people ran for Portland office this year as city govt undergoes sweeping change.

Crazy civic experiment by US standards?

Yes.

An historic local election?

Most definitely.

Also: Pretty f'ing cool, if you ask me.

Can't wait to see how it unfolds & what happens next.
