I'm aware that the American love of dystopia goes back decades, and many action /horror/sci fi films that we've grown up with played off of that. My bigger point is that now everyone is complaining about how dystopian everything has gotten in America, but I think we may have wished it into existence

I’m sure it was a great film, but my concern is more with the state of the American mindset for the last 50 years or so.
It seems to me that Americans have shifted from a hopeful/optimistic view of the future, to a gritty, grim and often pessimistic one. My issue isn’t with Mad max as franchise.
