“There are small monsters escaping through the door currently. Add them to the ones we already deal with in the wild, we have a lot to defend against. The door is also making the native monsters more feral, or more than usual, I should say. Hence the attack a few weeks ago.” Llywelyn cleared his throat. “We have men from the normal guard here and here.” He moved two figures of tents not too far away from the main city. “They’ve been ordered to keep watch and report any monsters that come nearer the city. If they get too close they’re to dispose of them.”

I slowly opened my eyes, only to find wide molten gold eyes looking back. My own eyes flicked between the pair in front of me, threatening to spill the tears they held. “Anais?” This time his voice was soft, brows raised in concern. I reached up to wipe my eyes, with a sniff and he pulled away. “I’m sorry for waking you. It was just a nightmare.” A nightmare I had too often. A nightmare that caused me to lose sleep most nights and earn the disapproval of my maid when she saw the dark circles under my eyes.

The knights weren’t relaxing, despite now being in the citadel. Where in the citadel, I had no idea. I had never been here before. It was such a huge compound, I hadn’t had the chance to explore all of it. I’d come back later, once the hubbub of today’s events had calmed down. However long that took.

Magic is such a big part of this story. Weavers, the magic users, range from famed high houses and those who live amongst the lower classes helping those who need it.

The magic fizzled out just as I could feel myself on the edge of weaving it. An exasperated sigh came from my lips. “I-I can’t do it. I haven’t been able to since that day.” I let my hands fall to my side and I slumped into the nearest chair in frustration. “Ask me to move something or maybe help a plant grow, I’ll be able to do it. But this? I can’t.”

The glow was an arch shape and was cast around the edges of what I assumed was a hidden door. The knights in front slowed and I saw Ardreth look over his shoulder to check I was still there, along with the other knights. Nodding, he pushed a well hidden brick in the wall and the door slid open, revealing a courtyard.
