I'm taking a wee break from work, but this article that I really enjoyed working on is published. It will be part of a great SI edited by Ivan Rajković and Jelena Vasiljević. I hope it contributes to the growing interest in human-nature politics in Yugoslavia.

Yes, university expense systems are difficult to navigate. But have you tried submitting receipts from Serbia to UniWien?

Good luck to me and our Serbian workshop participants I guess 😅

I usually don’t support working weekends, but this is day 2 of our writeshop on political ecologies of SEE and…. I’m loving it 🌱

With hard copies of graphic novels on BiH environmental struggles, thanks to Damir Arsenijević.

My plan for this year was to post more about readings that help me think. I was a bit slow, but here goes.

This week, a great article by @asantonova.bsky.social and Arvid van Dam on the environment and EU integration (in ES & BG) is helping me think through politics of land and landscape. Link 👇

Our chapter 'No alternative but Europeanisation: slow violence and critical imaginaries in/from/with South East Europe' is now out in this important co-edited volume.

Writing with @drdeiana.bsky.social and working with the editors and all the authors was a real treat — thank you!

But reading Creolizing the Modern alongside it opens up the book in so many ways that do not only go 'beyond land,' but help us see land in relation to empires, labour, race, religion, and gender.

I've been learning about ROU land politics, from researchers and activists. After reading Ion, these facts clicked in a different way. There is no way to capture the importance of land in any single social science concept. And yes, there is basically a sex scene with land (very Saltburn in my mind).

Desperate post 👇

Does anyone have a PDF of Cvijić's 'La peninsule Balkanique' (Balkansko poluostrvo i južnoslovenske zemlje: Osnove antropogeografije)? I'll take any language and any script at this point :)

Image of my 1922 edition that is not likely to survive a scan.

I'm presenting my favourite paper in Vienna on Wednesday, also available through a Zoom link.

It has all the important things: land, rivers, karst, and people working towards a better future.

Let me interrupt this end of the world feed with some good news.

This summer, I wrote a piece on the 'mass extinction event' of a magical seashell, pinna nobilis (for @womenwritebalkans.bsky.social)

Last weekend, the Pula Aquarium received over 60 live babies that are put in safe pools! 🥳

Hi new blue place 👋

My (almost) strictly academic feed will continue, but as a hello here’s a photo of a warm late summer evening from Istra.
