Previously a neuroscientist, now I write stuff in industry. Most of my tweets are about science and politics, some are personal and, hopefully, some are funny.
I can’t find anything anywhere about making a post-knitting fix for too big underarms on a sweater by using a mattress stitch. What am I missing about why this wouldn’t work? Isn’t it basically the same as seaming sweater pieces? #knitting

Has anyone seen these figurines in store or online this year? We got the mummy and pumpkin-head a couple years ago at Menards and just need the cat to complete the set. Can’t find it anywhere!

It’s probably silly that it bugs me so much, but when books mention a gun the author always seems to have to describe exactly what kind of gun it is instead of just “handgun” or “shotgun”. Why assume everyone knows what kind of gun a Sig Sauer is? I’d prefer we as a population didn’t.

Digging into the reinstated NIH grants. This story is an evolving doozy.

The reinstated grant is an R21 from Seattle Children's Hospital

I was very confused when I read the title:

"An intervention to promote healthy relationships among transgender and gender expansive youth"

When we learned about trade wars in high school I mostly thought it was boring. Living through it is something else.

SCHUMER: Would the senator yield for a question?

BOOKER: Chuck Schumer, it's the only time in my life I can tell you no

SCHUMER: I just want to tell you, do you know you have just broken the record? Do you know how proud America is of you?

Just so everybody understands, Booker has been speaking cogently about the issues the entire time and Strom Thurmond famously spent hours reading from the encyclopedia, because segregationists were and are dumbshits
If Sen. Cory Booker makes it to 7:19 p.m. EST, he will break segregationist Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond's record for his 24 hour 18 minute Senate floor speech against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

NYT, it’s not that hard. Just say “attempting to shutter”.
Trump stenography in the streets. Reality in the sheets.
Doesn't this NYT headline seem to be directly at odds with the subhead?

Chilling report from Brown University.

Administration advises all foreign students, staff, and faculty to postpone or reconsider (ie cancel) international travel, due to federal government's crackdown on universities.

Brown also warns against *domestic travel* -since it's unclear what ICE will do.

Thinking about fundamental, big questions in science.

What is consciousness?

Why does time feel like it moves faster as we get older?

What is the smallest assembly of cells that defines a behavior?

What’s up with Lacrymaria?

What happened to Republicans that is making them awful human beings?

It is incredible that you have the most plutocratic Cabinet in American history dismantling public services and creating an economic train wreck and then telling the public that this is the American dream.
Bessent: "The American dream is not, 'let them eat flat screens' ... the American dream is not contingent on cheap bobbles from China."

This is blood-boiling. Charles Rogers was awarded the Medal of Honor in Vietnam after being wounded three times leading the defense of a position.

Google his name and the entry below comes up. When you click, you'll see the page has been deleted and the URL changed to include "DEI medal."

Health groups on social media have become a cess pool of disinformation campaigns run by adversaries disguised as either medical experts or people who claim having conditions, then spread by useful idiots. Adversaries purposely breed anti-science and little to nothing is done to stop it. I hate it.

Most NIH-funded faculty I talk with don't even understand the basic issue that all grants are on indefinite hold, much less the scope of the anti-science movement being pushed on the right! The cloistered class needs to wake up and start pushing their institutions to take a public stand, and fast.

Have some posts coming up later today about what narratives are being pushed on the right to harm real science. Many scientists are in a bit of a bubble about this and may not realize what the right has been saying about us.

If you have any comments for us on this please DM/msg on signal.

Last night the President signed an order to gut the Institute of Museum & Library Services. But together, we know we can show up & defeat it.

Among the material devastation to everyday people, Senate Dems have now blown a hole in their ability to work with the House.

We had an agreed upon plan, House took immense risk, then Senate turned around midway and destroyed it w/ a fear-based, inexplicable abdication.

They own what happens next.
