The band kindly requests that you wear a respirator (N95 or KN95) for the duration of the show. There will be free high filtration mask at the door for those who don’t have them. We want our shows to be a place where we take care of each other. Wearing a high filtration mask is an act of material care and a show of solidarity with disabled and immunocompromised people. It’s a small thing we can do to keep each other safe. Covid and other airborne diseases continue to disable and kill people in our communities. 1 in 5 COVID infections results in long term symptoms and the risk of long term symptoms increases cumulatively with each infection. You all are welcome to advocate for improved indoor air filtration any time! The Journal of the American Medical Association Pediatrics says long covid is now the most common chronic illness in children. The biggest misconception is that only the (already) vulnerable are at high risk.
From The Sick Times on Instagram: a new study found that one in seven children under age six with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection met the probable diagnostic criteria for long COVID. Studying over 1,000 infants, toddlers, and pre-school aged children, researchers revealed differences in how long COVID presented between age groups. “Young children have been largely excluded from public conversations about the impact of COVID,” said one co-author. “[This research] should be a wake-up call to providers and parents: babies and toddlers can develop long COVID.” The authors also put together a resource designed for caregivers of children with long COVID, which identifies long COVID as “the most common chronic health problem in children.” Citation: journal of the American medical association pediatrics.

This illness is stigmatized, under-funded, and 80% of those affected are women. It’s usually caused by a virus, so many more people are affected since Covid began, & more continue to get this. It’s an absolute life-ruiner, in need of more advocates. ❤️

And medical sexism means doctors aren’t even educated about this stigmatized disease to KNOW that exercise is our kryptonite. It’s such a rich topic for journalism and storytelling! And so urgently needed! This could happen to anyone, maybe your future self will thank you for covering this. 💗💗
People living with ME/CFS have lower quality of life than people living with other severe chronic illnesses, including multiple sclerosis, congestive heart failure, and end-stage renal failure, with 25% of ME patients housebound or bedbound.

It’s common to start out mild and become more severe, either through more viral exposures (very common now), or by “pushing through” symptoms and over-exerting— something most doctors ADVISE for new ME patients. Medical sexism means they think we’re sad, not severely ill.
Myalgic Encephelomyelitis (ME) How sick are people with ME? In MILD cases, people lose 50% or more of their function. Their symptoms don’t allow them to function normally. Most people would consider having to decrease their activity 50% due to illness SEVERE, not mild! Moderate cases of ME cannot work, are mostly homebound, and often cannot care for themselves fully, or need to use a wheelchair outside of the home. Severe cases are bedbound, with many debilitating symptoms and very low quality of life. Very severe cases are paralyzed, cannot tolerate any stimuli or being touched, need tube feeding or oxygen. They are some of the sickest people on earth.

Since I’ve made this my pinned thread I’ll add that I was stable and mild for six years. Then we had a pandemic and now I’m severe. 🫠
