Here's what we've been waiting for! DPLA has made a GPS-based app that tracks what books have been banned in your area and makes them available to you legally and for free.

Readers get freedom, book banners get mad, authors get paid! Thebannedbookclub.info

My latest at Wired is up discussing the recent crises at Bluesky and Reddit, and what it says about content moderation.

I received comment from Bluesky's press office and analyse their reply here.

But, in short, balancing top-down and bottom-up moderation is hard; both sites are getting it wrong.
It's Twilight of the Mods for Bluesky and Reddit
Moderating a site isn't easy—just ask Elon. But Bluesky and Reddit are contrasting examples of how not to do it.

Librarians are defending the rights of readers and writers in the battle raging across the US over censorship, book challenges and book bans. That conflict has even changed how librarians are trained.

i am just catching up on this but it seems pretty bad (and outright deluded) to launch a social network without explicitly blocking people from using the most well-known racial slur in the english language as a username

Platforms are reluctant to admit that they are making editorial choices. I’ll put it this way: you don’t have to be a fancy spot with a dress code, but if people know it’s ok to shit on the floor in your establishment you’re going to get a lot of floor shitters and other customers will go elsewhere.

The bottom line is that you CANNOT ADDRESS RACISM WITH CODE.

Automation helps but you need teams of trained professionals who speak the local language, who understand context and nuance and who understand reclaiming and dogwhistles so they can make INFORMED JUDGMENT CALLS.

Like I wanna be clear - this is the least real *big* chance for BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, Disabled folks, poor folks, and sex workers to have a community we all exist in semi-harmony together. If Bluesky fails, it WILL schism because every other platform is hostile to 2+ of those groups.

We gotta make it.
Oh nah if Bluesky dies all I have is the corporate dystopia of threads and the burned out husk of twitter. That’s half the reason I’m so goddamn mad on here this past week.

I said it! bSky doesn't want to moderate much at all. They just want to "toss it back to the states" and have people make a BlackSky, a LibSky, a NaziSky, etc etc. That's why they're so intent on trying to get to Federation before too many people are here
That way, they can (for example) have a not-racist zone and a racist zone all at once with a separation between the two and different rules in each "room".

That's my guess because this thing was made by Jack, and these guys want to grow forever, include everyone, and not had to moderate it much.

The 13 CEOs at 12 media companies (Netflix has co-CEOs) average about $32 million in compensation each per year, with a few hitting over $50 mil.

The the increase that the WGA is asking for —the total amount for all 11,500 WGA members—is less than what these guys make together.

And if you can't see how the "let's legalize discrimination" and also "you shouldn't boycott something or speak out against something a person or business does because that's 'cancel culture'" narratives work together, then you're missing the big picture. It's not good.

For years, the right used to say that the correct response to stuff like this wasn't the government banning discrimination but that companies would avoid discrimination simply because doing otherwise would encourage boycotts and hurt their business.

But then came their anti-"cancel culture" push...
