One of my favourites is Hokusai's The Mansion of the Plates from his One Hundred Ghost Tales series. The ghost is returning to haunt her murderer.

Hokusai's woodblock print is dominated by Prussian blue, and shows a dark-haired spirit rising from a well and blowing a whisp of smoke from her mouth. Hokusai shows her as was customary at that time in painting ghosts - with pale faces without lower limbs, so blue and white patterned circles connect her to the well. The well is surrounded by some green leaves.

It feels an appropriate time to share this image of Winston Churchill at the White House in 1942 wearing one of his signature ‘siren suits’ - these allowed him to be woken in the middle of the night, either by an air raid or pressing news, and be dressed within a minute, hence its name siren suit.
This black and white photo shows Sir Winston Churchill on the lawn with the White House behind him in 1942. He is wearing a ‘siren suit’, essentially a fabric onesie.

So I went to my final 'Art in 15th Century Siena' class today and the teacher rewarded us with this self portrait of Domenico Beccafumi, and my WORD we have ourselves a Renaissance hottie 🔥

To celebrate joining Bluesky, it seems apt to share a few favourite from ‘Drawn to Blue’, a lovely little exhibition showcasing artists’ use of blue paper at The Courtauld 💙

The tree’s leaves are a vibrant shade of green, with white highlights and dark shading across the tree bark. Drawing of a head of a bearded man in profile, executed in black chalk. He has wavy hair around his face and his beard also appears wavy with movement rather than bushy. He has very determined eyes which look down at something out of frame to the right. A battle scene of soldiers fighting on horseback executed in brush and black wash, and white opaque watercolour on teal blue paper. Two St. Jerome’s done in the same year but worlds apart, Leonardo’s stunning drapery, and Michelangelo’s grotesque head - four excellent reasons to see ‘Drawing the Italian Renaissance’ at The King’s Gallery, London
