ProPublica reports that WH aide Paul Ingrassia sent to DHS a written “**request** to return the electronics to the Tates.”

Right:
Ingrassia’s lawyer says: “‘Mr. Ingrassia never **ordered** that the Tate Brothers' devices be returned
to them.’”
In his written request, a copy of which was reviewed by ProPublica, Ingrassia chided authorities for taking the action, saying the seizure of the Tates' devices was not a good use of time or resources. The request to return the electronics to the Tates, he emphasized, was coming from the White House. Ingrassia's lawyer, Edward Paltzik, said in a text message: "Mr. Ingrassia never ordered that the Tate Brothers' devices be returned to them, nor did he say — and nor would he have ever said - that such a directive came from the White House. This story is fiction, simply not true." When questioned about whether Ingrassia had asked authorities to return the devices, even if he did not order them to, Paltzik declined to comment, explaining that "the word 'ask' is inappropriate because it is meaningless in this context. He either ordered something or he didn't. And as I said, he did NOT order anything."

Trump tweets blatant lies, repeatedly, to show that he can—and that by virtue of his bully pulpit, his words, however absurd, always have consequences. Mnuchin showed that he can do the same thing, and that he has more power than the opposition.

The Republican has, after all, previously accused House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and former FBI Director James Comey of treason. He has also eyed treason investigations into Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff of California, along with The New York Times, Google and federal law enforcement officials. At one point, after one of his first-term State of the Union addresses, Trump even suggested that congressional Democrats might have committed “treason” because they failed to applaud to his satisfaction. In 2023, he declared his belief that members of the bipartisan Jan. 6 committee “should be tried for Fraud and Treason.” A year later, the Republican amplified a social media message that accused former House GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney of being “guilty” of “treason.” You’ve heard of the boy who cried “wolf”? I’d like to introduce you to the president who cried “treason.” It’s not at all healthy when an authoritarian president falsely — and casually — accuses various people and institutions of treason, effectively making this the background noise of our civic lives. Trump appointees like FHFA Director Bill Pulte seem to violate the law with abandon, demonstrating fealty to their dear leader.
By contrast, Joe Allen, a lawyer who spent 40 years at the Justice Department, has joined the honor roll of federal employees fired for acting with integrity.
He became FHFA's acting inspector general in April 2025, according to an archived page of the agency's website. On Monday, the website for the FHFA's Office of Inspector General listed the position as "currently vacant". It was unclear when the website was updated. The most recent snapshot available via the Internet Archive was from late September and listed Allen as acting inspector general. In response to news of Allen's removal, Democratic U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts said, "Director Pulte has some answering to do." Before joining FHFA's inspector general's office, Allen was a 40-year veteran at the Justice Department, where he held various roles from a federal prosecutor to senior legal positions with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Eyelasives.

Another possible motive for firing this IG:
Allen was preparing to notify Congress that the FHFA was refusing to cooperate with (presumably provide information to) his office, even though Congress mandates such cooperation by statute.
His ouster also came about as he was preparing to send a letter to Congress notifying lawmakers that the FHFA was not cooperating with the inspector general's office, three of the sources said. These individuals said the FHFA director would typically have been notified of such a letter. Reuters was unable to independently determine whether Pulte was informed.

Trump fired yet another inspector general (IG), the FHFA’s Acting IG, Joe Allen, after Allen apparently gave exculpatory information to the DoJ lawyers prosecuting NY AG Letitia James, as required by the constitution & basic fairness.

The information he turned over was constitutionally required, two of them said, while a third described it as being potentially relevant in discovery.

Prior to his ouster, Tidmarsh questioned Prasad and Makary about the new "tumor board-style" committee its legality. "It was a total mess," Tidmarsh told Stat on Sunday. "It was shrouded in secrecy and paranoia. So I sent an email saying I believe that this (first) meeting will be informal, non-decisionary." In mid-October, the FDA announced the first nine drug companies whose new drug applications will receive the new accelerated process. Several would have been reviewed by CBER. Spoke with Reuters about foreigners’ pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into Trump businesses — not because of the Trump brothers’ business acumen, but to obtain the kind of impunity, freedom from legal constraints, that only the president can deliver.

But we were saved by "congressional leaders who care about the Constitution and their responsibilities as a co-equal branch of government to hold the excesses of the executive to account, a la Sam Ervin and Howard Baker"
It matters a great deal whether you have congressional leaders who care about the Constitution and their responsibilities as a co-equal branch of government to hold the excesses of the executive to account, a la Sam Ervin and Howard Baker or even Mitt Romney, … or you have moral cowards like Mike Johnson and John Thune who care first and foremost about serving a party leader and his personality cult. It matters whether you have justices on the Supreme Court who believe in the court’s rule to uphold precedents and established law … or you have partisan hacks like Brett Kavanaugh and John Roberts who see their role as deciding the politics first and then backing into the law, Calvinball style. As Justice Jackson dissented this year, “This is Calvinball jurisprudence with a twist. Calvinball has only one rule: There are no fixed rules. We seem to have two: that one, and this administration always wins.” For generations, we have been saved from these fates and uncertainties because voters chose leaders of both parties with good character who, in turn, appointed people of good character, who, in turn, were constrained by a professional and nonpartisan civil service of good character that took seriously their oaths to serve the Constitution and not an individual.

My decision was a long time coming. Earlier this year, the chief content officer for our parent company, e.Republic, stated in a meeting that we should not run articles that could draw the attention of the Trump White House and have them try to shut us down. At the time, her position struck me as wrong in a couple of ways. Chiefly, there was the obvious betrayal of journalistic ethics. Secondly, however, Governing is such a small (although I’d like to say prestigious) publication that the idea anyone in the current White House was reading it, let alone preparing to hammer it, struck me as dubious. Governing was started nearly 40 years ago by editors from Congressional Quarterly who thought state policy should get more news coverage. Even after it was bought in 2009 by e.Republic, Governing remained one of the few outlets to pay continuous attention to governments outside of Washington. It often receives compliments such as being called “the Rolling Stone of state of the state addresses.” It’s a wonky publication, and it’s not huge, but it has a sterling reputation for covering a crucial niche. The notion that the litigious Trump would hit us with a lawsuit was not impossible, but it was unlikely. We certainly weren’t reliant on federal contracts to stay afloat. But after Trump’s second term began, the corporate anxiety about rocking the boat with our coverage became a constant.

Don Craven resigned as CEO of the Illinois Press Association after his board wanted him to get out of litigation against the Trump administration regarding coverage of anti-ICE protests. Last month, a quartet of journalists in Alaska resigned after an article about Charlie Kirk was altered after publication in response to complaints from a GOP state lawmaker.
