I really hope another institution with a sense of cultural history gives Meanjin a new home, just as UniMelb did in 1945. In the meantime writers, go to the Meanjin site to make back up copies of your contributions over the years, particularly for the online-only edition!

My Review of Belvoir's adaptation of The Spare Room
In 1977, Helen Garner’s first novel, Monkey Grip, was released and Judy Davis made her film debut. The careers of these women in Australian literary and film culture have run in parallel ever since, but they’ve also circled each other.
Judy Davis brings intensity to Garner’s The Spare Room
Judy Davis finds the humour in Helen Garner’s quietly seething protagonist in a newly adapted stage production of The Spare Room.

Antarctic ice is melting at a rate that is adding the equivalent of 250 Sydney Harbours a year to sea levels. For ‪@themonthly.com.au I spoke to researchers trying to understand this phenomenon by using NASA satellites and voyaging to the remote Denman Glacier ‬

Canberra today was a bit Whitlamesque (Blue Poles detail by Jackson Pollock, and Gough portrait by Clifton Pugh - who was painting Kerr at the same time and knew a thing or two about what was coming).

It’s been a particularly tough year on earth. Personally I’ve found it one of the hardest yet. Was lucky to have had a week of total joy at the Whitlam house writing this for @themonthly.bsky.social on Whitlam & pools, water & politics. Enjoy
