This extract from @thetimes.com article on Gregg Wallace, and a comment on his master chef co-host should make us reflect on how active bystanding is hard - but is something all senior people in positions os responsibility should practise.

When I was thinking about leaving medicine, I was feeling lost.

To be honest, I was struggling - tired from the long training, balancing work and family life.

I didn't ask for support but I wasn't offered any either.

What advice could have helped me?

A thread 🧵

When I look back I am grateful to those who understood. At med school I was always 10 mins late for anatomy with @profaliceroberts.bsky.social having dropped kids off at school & literally running up the hill. People just assumed I was late coz I didn't care. Thank you Prof Roberts
As I’ve become older I’ve realised more how experience can be different as a female in any “career track” particularly when it comes to family planning, and would have such different advice for young women wanting families and a career now!

A common misconception about pyschological safety is that is about being 'nice'. If the people banging on about #PsychologicalSafety actually read the literature rather than making assumptions, they would understand the highest level is *the ability to disagree*. Even robustly, if required.

If one more person reminds me to #BeKind I will…

…not

Toxic kindness is as bad as all the other grim behaviours I talk about

It’s performative, rhetorical & often weaponised to mean “don’t do things I don’t like”

It’s discretionary, silences marginalised voices & maintains the status quo

Lots of learning points here on SGLT2 inhibitor-associated ketoacidosis!

• withhold SGLT2 inhibitors for 72 h before elective surgery to allow 5 half-lives to elapse
• SGLT2 inhibitors should be resumed after full oral diet and in the absence of ketosis

The NHS could learn a great deal from James Timpson’s approach to running a business.

Every year he asks only 1 question in his staff survey about how happy they are.

How happy are you at work?

The female medical workforce
In the UK, the proportion of female medical students has remained static over the last decade, at around 55%; however, at consultant level, only 36.6% of doctors are women. The reasons for this drop ...
