#bookreview no.25: Babel by R.F. Kuang. I liked the clever magic system and (as a former linguistics student and current polyglot) all the fun with translation. Also enjoyed the moral. I was not a fan of the pacing. In reading this I discovered I am completely uninterested in academia as a setting.

Happy birthday to my love 💕 I got them a trilobite plushie and it's so cute. How can I compete with 20 legs, an articulated shell, and dazzling blue eye stalks???

First time doing this. It's been a prolific year. Thanks to these great editors, the judges at Grist Imagine 2200, and of course to everyone who has read my work.

Thank you @sfdirewolf.bsky.social for everything you've done for us. When I was given this book for my birthday one year it was the right book at the right time and changed how I saw myself forever.

Writing up to 2k words a day I feel increasing happiness but at a certain point I begin expending soul energy from the depths of my being to keep writing and then I get cranky

#bookreview no.24: On Connection by Kae Tempest. Beautiful essays on creativity and connection by way of Jung and Killer Mike. I'd recommend this quick read to any writer or Tempest fan.

#bookreview no. 23: The Name Of The Rose by Umberto Eco. A political lesson about the possibility of upending political hierarchies, wrapped in a joke, wrapped in a murder-mystery, wrapped in historical fiction and all shrouded in metafiction.

A true-ish story of war and fungal spread, INVASION FORCE tells of how Clathrus archeri, a fungus known as the Devil's Fingers, reached Europe from Aotearoa New Zealand in 1914. Out now in The Dodge!

#bookreview no.22: The Ice Palace by Tarjei Vesaas. It's simply not the kind of book I prefer. The most affecting part is the beginning, with the friendship between siss and unn, and then of course unn in the ice. Otherwise too sparse and quiet for my taste, but altogether good at what it does.

"...Thilo claimed that a landscape is capable of killing a person. That it has immense strength, because it is a concentration of various energies, the culmination of geometry. And this happens here too, in Görbersdorf, once a year the landscape takes its sacrifice and kills a man."

Finally sharing a pic from the Tropez reading beginning of August!

I made my top by hand-stitching hundreds of glass beads on an old blouse. Proud of that too 💅🏼 it's supposed to be reminiscent of a lung infection. The beads are all booger colored. Here's a close up just for fun.
