Early train for me to get to Kingston University @royalsocbio.bsky.social funded symposium - I’m giving a keynote on ‘Decolonising and diversifying the biosciences - what do we really mean and can we ever achieve it?’

Why do I feel so seen by a cartoon dog?! #stress

Lovely day in Durham for Genetics Society plant biology meeting - delivered workshop on ‘Plant Biology Education for the 21st Century: An authentic and inclusive approach’. Shame I couldn’t stay for longer, but hoping I stimulated some useful ideas and conversations #StemEducation #PlantBiology

Looking forward to reading and digesting this on my long train journeys this week. Really want my work and that of my team to adopt a really clear user centred design - who is educational development for, what are their needs, and how to we design really effective support for educators? #HigherEd

Somewhere out there there is someone whose claim to fame is that they designed the Lego hermit crab. I can only hope they have the levels of job satisfaction I imagine they do!

One of the things I really like about Buckinghamshire New University thus far is how the campus really reinforces learner identity in an accessible and fun way - this is just outside my office and makes me smile every time I see it

Haha! I very fondly remember writing a book chapter with my mini-me in the sling - typing while rocking from side to side to keep her asleep was odd but got quite good at it! Here’s to mums rocking it in academia (while putting no pressure on *any* new mum to do any work they don’t want to do!)

I have started my new job! Great first day at Buckinghamshire New University as Head of Pedagogy and Practice - lots to learn but I’ve got great colleagues and some great work to build upon #BNUproud

And that’s a wrap! What a fantastic meeting #PlantSciEd in Lancaster turned out to be! So many rich discussions, and lovely to meet new people as well as catch up with old friends. Watch this space for meeting outputs, including potential Manifesto for Plant Biology Education

Really valuable discussions at our #PlantSciEd meeting - we did a SWOT analysis of current plant biology education this morning, and are now heading into a great afternoon of talks. Do you agree with our analysis - what have we missed?! #PlantSci

And #PlantSciEd is up and running! We’ve started with an excellent keynote from Stephen Spoel giving us an overview of UK plant science strategy, and food for thought as to what this means for educators.

News: Today is my last day at University of Hull. I arrived 9 years ago as a junior lecturer, and leave as a Reader in Bioscience Education, NTF and PFHEA. It has sometimes been challenging, but I’ve also been blessed by fantastic colleagues & students who I will miss very much

Been doing quite a lot of thinking about academic identity recently, so for a bit of fun made a word cloud out of my 'identity' statement at the start of my CV. This includes CV's going back for ~15 years - quite pleasing seeing this is a graphical summary of how I have described myself #academicsky

Today is probably the last time I will be in a lab. I’ve worked and/or taught in labs for ~20 yr, some of the most enjoyable parts of being a science educator. I will miss it lots, but am shortly heading to pastures new that won’t involve labs, so making sure I enjoy every last moment #academicsky

Some new friends in the lab this week! Am helping out with 2nd year genetics labs - students are making double stranded RNA for RNAi in locusts. As a plant biologist I am very much outside my comfort zone, but excited to see students engage with a new set of experiments

Super chuffed to have been awarded Principal Fellowship of @advancehe.bsky.social recently - requires a lot of reflection on career, professional identity, status of education in contemporary #HigherEducation but really proud of it as an achievement #pfhea #advancehe

I have two new articles out in The Biochemist magazine on #decolonisation of the bioscience curriculum, inspired by our @sebiology.bsky.social symposium. Article 1 = why we need to decolonise, including scientific racism, eugenics, bioprospecting and current biases portlandpress.com/biochemist/a...

New Paper Alert! I present a competency based model of plant bio education in Plants People Planet @newphyt.bsky.social that focuses on what students can *do* rather than what they know. Builds on awesome work of Uni of Hull #plantscience #education nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
