Hey, friends? Friends. I feel like a lot of folks understandably get confused about what they should do when someone sends them creative work for review, whether it's commissioned artwork, graphics for an AV project, etc. If you aren't The Expert, you don't need to supply expert critique/guidance.

I'm tired today, folks. If you work in graphics-related AV, please consider your GFX specialists in the process. A GFX-heavy spot can't successfully be art directed by people who don't understand GFX. It's not right to ask a designer-animator to Figure It Out when presented with an unusable concept.

These two creative advertising industry conditions don't line up, in my brain:
1) Clients and agencies don't value art/design/animation (Unwillingness to pay, disrespect of specialists, pushing AI, etc.)
2) Clients and producers who don't have any related expertise want to dictate the art direction.

I'm begging everyone in social/digital creative advertising to stop defaulting to sliding panels in/out. We don't have to keep cutting panels in over a black screen, either. Hire art directors! They have far more specific and inventive ideas for dealing with difficult aspect ratios and UI overlays.

Editors. I love you, but you should never manipulate a designer/animator's graphics (unless you're forced). You don't know what you're doing, it causes a LOT of issues, and it's disrespectful to mess up our work and force us to solve the problem later.

When I'm stressed about trying to balance work with family/friend time, I remember the days when I was stuck inside a shared office for 15-16hr and couldn't visit home because of PTO limits. I worked on an extremely intense creative content finish this summer sitting on a pool deck with a Corona.

I rarely apply for jobs, but one application question hit me recently. I didn't answer it well (I downplayed my achievements big time and responded while Tired), but I liked the question: What result are you most proud of? I hadn't been asked that particular question before...

Sometimes I get frustrated with my art. Then I remember it's wild that my brain just Does This. People I love resonate with it. We're always moving the goal posts as we grow, but this one simple piece of art is now a print, a sticker set, stationery, etc. It makes people feel good. That's enough.

YouTube ads are torture. That guy who can't pronounce Vuori? Grammarly aggressively (VERY poorly) trying to convince students and pros to leave the writing/thinking to machines? I keep being harassed about murdered children in the middle of Smosh videos.

Look. I get why people worry about what others think of them. I don't worry much it, but plenty of people I THOUGHT didn't like me have made efforts to connect with me out of the blue. I assume they don't like me, and then I'm met with so much warmth. I really think we misjudge this stuff A LOT.

Here's your reminder to be extremely careful with Apple Pay and the Apple Store. I just placed a $3500 order for delivery today that defaulted to an address across the country, and I can't cancel/change because I've been waiting over an hour for the order acknowledgment email. This is horrifying.

Folks are really out there devaluing design/animation at every turn and acting like anyone can do it, but there are a lot of Experts who can hardly do the job. The work is mysterious and important!
