Today I canceled my personal Microsoft 365 subscription because of Microsoft's continued contracts with Israel's military. While I was glad to see that the company has ceased providing its products to the Israeli army to use for surveillance--surveillance that contributed to the displacement, wounding and death of thousands of Palestinian people--I cannot continue supporting Microsoft until it ends all contracts with the Israeli government. The UN recently affirmed what Palestinians and international experts have been telling the world for years: Israel's actions in Gaza are genocidal. The second best time to cut ties with the perpetrators of genocide is now. Sincerely, Kate Schapira

One of my community climate resilience collaborators brought this back recently, from one of our first workshops together, & I thought I'd share it here. This is a good one for metabolizing any kind of deep, hard change through feeling more than one thing at a time.
We know something is going to change. Even if we don’t do any of the things we just said, even if none of the things the town is planning happen, we know that climate change is going to change some things about life here in town. You can’t not think about this stuff now, the flooding, the heat. That’s already a change. And even if we actually make some things better, we were still used to the old things. Even when you leave a bad relationship or a lousy job or a terrible apartment, there’s still the loss of what you wished it could have been. So if you’re willing, you can take a second to say a grateful farewell to what we might have thought the future was going to be, if climate change didn’t intervene. And another second to thank the past for getting us to a place where we can handle change. And yet one more second to give thanks to the present for being the time when we get to be the change, even if we don’t know exactly what form that will take. Close your eyes or stare into space, feel the chair under you. Breathe in the sounds of the people around you, even the ones you don’t agree with or are frustrated with. Breathe out some gratitude for the air you just breathed in, for the ground under your feet, even for the heat of the sun and the power of the water. Breathe in the power of each other. Breathe out gratitude.

Here's an exercise from my book for recognizing the feeling of "enough," of sufficiency--something discouraged by the economic structures we're both invested & trapped in! Recognizing this feeling can help you distinguish betw the reality of scarcity & the fear of it, & make clearer decisions. (3/3)
TOURING YOUR BLESSINGS STEP 1: Each person identifies one thing you enjoy or are grateful for that you’re also rich in. (Houseplants, songs memorized, opportunities to cook food you like…) STEP 2: Spend three minutes luxuriating in and appreciating that thing by envisioning it and enjoying it with your mind’s senses. At the end of the three minutes, thank that thing or activity for being in your life. STEP 3: Taking turns, do a “show and tell” where each person shows off or describes an example of the thing they enjoy or love, and others show appreciation.

Do not use LLM or “AI” writing tools like ChatGPT for any part of this course. If you’re in this class because you want to get better at writing—whatever “better” means to you—those tools won’t help you learn that. If you’re taking this course to fulfill a requirement for your concentration, you might as well learn what else the course can offer you, and benefit from the feedback your classmates and I are giving—which a LLM cannot do. If you don’t think you can write without LLM or generative “AI” tools, this is not the course for you. If you are concerned about completing the work on time, the solution is to ask for an extension or to organize with your classmates (see below) to reduce the workload for all. One of our readings deals with some of the ethical, aesthetic and labor questions raised by LLMs, and we can use that reading to talk about polemic and position writing as well as to raise counterpoints.

If you’re having a difficulty with another student, or a difficulty with me that you want to speak to me about privately, please do. But if you’re having a difficulty with the class—with the way the class is structured, or with something that affects many/all students—I encourage you to talk with each other first, and present a shared case or demand to me. This is a useful skill to develop, both for college and beyond.

#PVDlocal / all my RI local climate/environmental & disability justice people: *good, usable* public transit reduces pollution & emissions & increases equity. For that the state needs to spend a bit of money. Reach out to the address at the bottom (also in alt text) to get your legislator on board!
SAVE RIPTA: the Save RIPTA Coalition is a diverse group of community organizations, labor unions and individuals who are working to raise awareness of issues that exist within our only public transportation system to ensure that it is safe, efficient and reliable for all Rhode Islanders. In order to do this, we need to guarantee proper funding from the state so that those who rely on RIPTA aren't affected, but rather that their state legislative leaders recognize the necessity to properly invest in a convenient, accessible and affordable public transportation system. The coalition is requesting $88 million for RIPTA in Rhode Island's FY 2025 Budget: $18 million to prevent the fiscal cliff in their 2024 Budget by supporting the maintenance of existing bus service. $24 million to support hiring and training more bus operators by increasing wages and benefits to be competitive and in line with the cost of living in Rhode island. $46 million annually to implement the Transit Master Plan that would expand transit service statewide--a key strategy for reaching the state's legally mandated Act on Climate goals. We need you as our legislators to fight for proper investments for RIPTA [for] essential workers, students, families, individuals with disabilities, seniors and so many more who depend on it every day! TwoADay.org is holding an emergency protest against Trump's plans to have the USA "own" Gaza TOMORROW: 4:30-5:30 Thurs Feb 6 at the Federal Courthouse Building, across the street from Kennedy Plaza. I don't know this group, so you'll need to do your own exploration and draw your own conclusions.

My mom, Diane Schapira, a master potter for over 50 years, is donating some of her work (not, uh, everything you see here, but something LIKE the things you see here) to raise money for AMOR.
An array of ceramic bowls, plates, mugs, and vases. Some of the bowls are turquoise inside with a dark rim; some are cream-colored with a line-drawn flower. The vases are white, the mugs are speckled, all are shapely and distinct because their maker is the boss. More ceramic plates and bowls! The plates are mostly white with a dark blue splodge pattern around the rim; the bowls are turquoise, or a vivid blue. There are reused yogurt containers filled with scrap clay in the background because this is a working studio thank you very much
