Rachel Reeves says this Labour Governments decisions are "necessary."

Why is it always necessary to hit the living standards of the 99%?

When are we going to make the necessary decisions about extreme wealth?

It'd be cool if the "increasing the cost of motoring hurts poor people" people cared anything like as much about cost to people who rely on public transport - who are disproportionately likely to be poor and disabled, and who consistently face far greater increases in cost.

This.
New cycle lanes are not for people who currently cycle.
They are for people who drive because it’s too dangerous to cycle.

This is so important to understand. We MUST NOT let anyone get rid of our NHS, it’s just too important for us all - individually AND as a society.

Why are commentators spending so much time on how RefUK would go about implementing fascist policy and not enough time explaining that RefUK are fascists?
It would be messy and chaotic and crazy expensive but ultimately Reform can override courts if they have a majority and I don't see why, say, the Taliban wouldn't sign a returns agreement to get back people they would like to torture and kill. So yes it could work.
One of two very good threads by Adam on this. A startling number of people - responding, in part, by the tone set by their government - just have this very complacent 'oh, no, this plan will never work'. I mean, 1) it could but also 2) they will definitely try.

Migrants didn't cut council funding. Migrants didn't cut NHS funding. Migrants didn't close youth centres. Migrants didn't sell off council houses. Migrants aren't filling our rivers with sewage.

Farage and co. will tell you to point the finger at migrants.

Don't fall for it.

Overheard at the playground:

“I’m seeing all of these parents pull up w/ their kids on cargo bikes & thinking I should try biking here next time.”

Do not underestimate the potential inspiration & motivation you might offer simply by riding your bike.

This is important to understand. For example, those people who MUST GET IN FRONT (dangerously) of the bike that they see as slow and ‘holding them up’. They’re falling for this, rather than understanding that their overall journey time will not be affected by more than a couple of minutes, at most.
I don't think most people understand how our brains have adjusted to the high speeds of driving. What once felt fast feels normal. And thus anything slower feels like unacceptable impediment. It isn't just better insulation and shocks (although it helps - my '84 Volvo *told you* when you hit 60 mph)

Really useful article summarising the data around 20mph speed limits. One to save, and send to local councillors and MPs.
Great piece on the Welsh government’s 20mph policy by @willhaycardiff.bsky.social

“What is great about evidence based policy is that it has a wonderful habit of working”

Inspiration for England as DfT work on the promised road safety strategy.
Turns out the 20mph limit was great idea!
Two years on from the controversial policy, it's becoming increasingly clear that the doubters were wrong

So today I needed to get to Timperley, Gtr M/cr. No bike racks in the village centre, where all the shops are, so I didn’t cycle. It’s a real shame. @walkridetrafford.bsky.social

The more people own cars, the more our society is built on the expectation that people will own cars, and the more people who do own cars insist that they can't do without them, and the more people who don't own cars are treated as an afterthought & an inconvenience.

Bravo to the driver of the black Peugeot, who perfectly waits for me to pass in the cycle lane before turning left across the lane.
Boo to the impatient driver of the white Citroën, who beeps twice at the Peugeot driver while he's waiting. The wait is only a matter of seconds.

This is a v short service road + parking for a row of shops, joining the main road just beyond the white van.
I’m appalled that a speed hump has had to be installed to slow down rat-runners, who just can’t wait to join the main road, just to the right of where I’m standing.
It’s a telling detail.

It is 39°C in Lisbon today. The same in Madrid. In Paris next week it will also be 39°C.

Look at this picture. People are under trees, where it can be up to 12°C cooler.

Given trees take decades to mature and many don’t survive, cities need to plant many more street trees. And urgently.

So true. New protected bike lanes have been installed near where I live. And I have noticed just how much more relaxed I am when I reach my destination, if it is within the new protected area. Contrast to when I travel further, where there's no protection - I do indeed use so much more mental energy
I think something non cyclists don't quite understand is the amount of mental exhaustion one feels after biking in car-heavy environment. It's just constant vigilance.
My jaw literally dropped, it’s not an exaggeration to say as a cyclist one feels constantly like you will be hit by a car on the roads:

Automobile association found that almost 10% of the time a cyclist crosses the road they have a potential conflict with a vehicle.
Severity low/med just means 1/

Remember this picture, & others like it, every time you hear someone in your city say "we're not Amsterdam."

This was #Amsterdam in the 1970s.

Many of the cities we admire made better choices regarding cars in the past. and are still making better choices today.

Better choices instead of excuses.

Absolutely. I fit this demographic; I was a child in the ‘70s. I played in the street daily with friends from the same street. There were few cars, & they were smaller, so fitted in driveways or took up less road space. They were driven slower and carefully ‘cos they knew children played there.

It's worth everyone reading what she is on record supporting. Amendment 36:
