Ty @naomikritzer.bsky.social for sharing this explainer!
Love to see the Sedgwick County Zoo putting out a good explainer on why GenAI slop videos of animals are a problem & how to identify them! It’s succinct, easy to read, and doesn’t shame people for not knowing better. A+ useful link to share with family and friends.

The Reality of AI Animal Content – Sedgwick County Zoo
If you spend any time on social media, you’ve probably seen them – bears bouncing on trampolines, apes caught on doorbell cameras, or “rescued” wild animals acting in ways that seem too good to be…

“French Toast” is a perfect food name. That is *absolutely* what just happened to that toast.

I find a lot of discussions about technology these days come down to two questions: what do we actually know?, and, what is it possible for us to know?

A needed dose of cute
These Pygmy Fruit-eating Bats are another one of my neighbors here at @casabentbill.bsky.social #CostaRica

They cut along the midrib of banana leaves to make them collapse into a protected little house. And then they cuddle with each other and wonder why this strange man is looking at them.

Rosa Parks' courage was precisely NOT a single act but perseverance. What made it so courageous was she had made stands before, others had, there was NOTHING to suggest that taking a stand this day would do something. But still, if "I got up I would approve of this treatment and I did NOT approve."

Excellent 🧵 above this comment on Montgomery boycott
People today get mired in 'the right action.' Many criticize current actions as being disruptive or improbable. But the biggest lesson of the boycott is that wewill not know what will work—you have to take step after step, it will be lonely, people will call it disruptive, but you must do it anyway.

Cub: Mom, I love you, but you’re such a dork sometimes. It’s like… You speak Dorkish.

Me, in the absent-minded tone of the parent who thought they told you this already: Oh yes! I’m fluent.

Today during a meetup with other students of Hoocąk I got to see more of the incredible beauty & logic of this language I love so much & am so bad at. Can’t really describe it in a thread, but love the way it’s affecting my thinking

More than 2,500 Starbucks workers are on strike. They’re demanding dignity: fair pay, safe conditions, a contract that respects their labor.

It’s time their voices are heard at the same volume as CEOs earning millions.

Pretty!
This composition had eluded me for nearly a decade, but yesterday I was finally able to capture it. A train rolled through just as the Duquesne Incline was crossing over the tracks in #Pittsburgh, creating a picture perfect winter scene. It was worth the hours and hours I've waited over the years.

"Donald Trump's Secretary of War denounced by Franklin the Turtle"

every part of that is so weird. Why is everything just so fucking weird all of the time now
🔥 BREAKING: A spokesperson for Kids Can Press, the publisher of the Franklin the Turtle books, messaged me today about Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth using the likeness and image from the books to make light of killings in the Caribbean in his post yesterday on X.

It's amazing how so many billionaires - who have WAY more money than they could possibly need in 500 lifetimes - REALLY want to avoid paying small slivers of tax money to benefit a common good like social safety services for less fortunate countrymen within the society that made them billionaires.

As a Euro-Am witness to the pain Pretendians cause to my Indigenous friends, I’m so happy to see this thread & the evidence of progress it shows.

Some Pretendians long to belong to this ancient place & her ancient peoples. I can relate. But we will never earn that right if we keep stealing.
Bluesky may not be great for this yet. But i'm gathering reports/policies from universities, institutions, agencies on verification of #Indigenous membership/citizenship if anyone has any leads. So far, i have (and I'll add as i go): 🧵

There is hope for the future
There was an article in The Guardian a few weeks back about how Gen Z find bookshops preferable to online shopping, and a key factor was that an algorithm will offer you 6000 books identical to the one you just finished whereas a bookseller will offer you three that are different but meet the vibe.

The Boston Globe identified the companies in Massachusetts that employ the most SNAP recipients. A key stat: "In Massachusetts, 74% of working-age recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are employed, half of them full-time."
