This system works really well when combined with strong layers.

Here the water and dirt are in layer 0, grass layer 1, trees layer 2 and so on.

They stack similar to how they would in 3d.

If you have to render in a single layer, though, there are better autotile systems like the one in RPGMaker.

Update: LuaBridge has worked very well as a lightweight alternative to Sol. It's a little more restrictive in its syntax, but compilation is much faster now.

I've been using Sol for my C++ Lua integration, but the compile complexity seems to be ballooning, so I'm considering LuaBridge or even using the Lua C API directly 😱.
