I think there is also the possibility that novelty plays a role, especially given everyone's dissatisfaction with "establishment" types. Part of Planter's appeal has always been being something of a blank slate for all kinds of voters.

Cognitive impairment is unfortunately common after a stroke, and affects judgment and decision making.

I think we need to be very delicate when we say this so as not to add even more stigma to disability than already exists, but the honest answer is that he had a stroke.

It is funny because they are trying to weasel word their way out of saying anything that might sound partisan but the phrasing of "apparent blunder" here just means leaving open the possibility that he meant exactly what he said.
