I remember loving Tom Stoppard plays back when I first moved to London. Then Leopoldstadt came along, which blew me away. What a loss.

Baroness Hayman says that the law would benefit more than the 1% who may use it.

"I think it would give tremendous comfort and courage to many people with terminal diseases, knowing that if the worst comes to the worst, if palliative care can't help, there is an option they could choose to take."

Incredibly happy this is through. I remember my dad’s death, even with incredible palliative care there was so much pain. @kimleadbeatermp.bsky.social thank you.
The person we have to thank is Kim Leadbeater: an astonishingly accomplished MP. She is proof that political change is possible, if you set your heart on it and put your mind to it. iandunt.substack.com/p/in-praise-...
In Praise of Kim Leadbeater
The Labour MP has provided a vision of what politics can be: practical, empathetic, consensual and rational.

I just got a notice that an academic conference for 2026 was being moved from the US to Canada because of concerns people have with entering the US.
The cell phone searches and random detentions at the border are going to have long-term negative effects on the US.

Just been to a celebration of Edna O’Brian and loved this quote of her as she lay not that long from death as she drank champagne: we know the enemy now, Prosecco!

📚💙 I’ve just finished Cause for Alarm by Eric Ambler. An early example of the spy genre from the 30s, an engineer takes a job running an armaments business in Italy as the shadows of war wrap around the continent. With spies and fascists all around he has little choice but to respond.

Book highlights from January💙📚
A People's Tragedy -heartbreaking, human, painful and insightful with a clear message for today at the end. The Village, an excellent murder in 1940s Japan; love Anglo Saxon history; Pachinko, captivating, thought provoking, looks at racism - worth a read.

Any woman who has ever received online abuse has some understanding of what Jess Philips is now exposed to, but it is on an entirely different level.
It is dangerous to her safety.
Yes, it is diplomatically “delicate”. But if you do nothing it is an admission of your own impotence.
A capitulation.
