Quiet but also outspoken?
PhD working in biotech. Berniecrat. Feminist, atheist, ally.
All of this boils down to resentment of experts being given authority.

It is extremely sad that so many people would rather die or risk their loved ones dying than admit 'common sense' just doesn't come with enough info.

NYT's credibility is deservedly waning, but it's still considered 'the' newspaper of this country.

Rather than demanding people give up a resource, it will probably be far more successful to suggest a replacement. Is there a credible major newspaper that hasn't been bought by an oligarch?

When you say you wouldn't help you also at minimum imply *why* you wouldn't help.

And that comes down to what you think is more important - ie, prioritizing values.
July 3, 2025 at 10:17 AM
I regret to inform you that you are probably the only one here who is completely oblivious that when comparing 'wrongs', like in this convo, it comes down to weighing which values prevail.

No one finds the purely 'legalist' stance you are taking novel, clever or practical.
July 3, 2025 at 2:28 AM
The problem isn't 'reading', it's disagreement with your prioritization of values.

It is *easy* to enforce more heavily on the less wealthy and you seem fine with that

Grocery workers don't have to take on the risk of 'a slow night' or a spate of stingy customers.

But really - the tips carve-out is probably because the wealthy are about to abuse the fuck out of it somehow.
July 2, 2025 at 7:52 PM
Everyone should pay their taxes, but when the rich rig our entire system to get out of it, then the focus should be on them. It is morally bankrupt to focus on people who use the extra money for basic needs instead of yachts or more investment options.
July 2, 2025 at 7:50 PM
Eat them before they eat us.

Because this bill is basically the wealthy taking another giant bite out of all of us.
July 2, 2025 at 6:20 PM
Why should any of us give a shit if someone making under $60k pays all of their taxes?

The wealthy support entire industries and lobbies to avoid paying their taxes. And we lose a lot more government revenue from that than taxes on tips.

If the rich don't have to play by the rules, no one should.

"secretly". Bc the closets they are in are see-through.

They are petty people with no character, which is why they are terrible human beings in general, but also why they don't have the spine to just come out.

It's the Big Betrayal Bill
June 30, 2025 at 6:03 AM
What they hate and fear most about "woke" culture is that it roots out bullying.

So the bullies are freaking out and pulling out all stops to re-instate hierarchical authoritarianism.
June 30, 2025 at 2:11 AM
Trump supporters have attacked and/or killed not just individual politicians but also their families.

Any Rs that cross the line have to brace for being targeted with that.

I don't think Murkowski or Collins have the fortitude to stand up to that.

I saw someone else call it the "Big Betrayal Bill" and that's what I'm calling it from now on
June 30, 2025 at 1:30 AM
INAL but it seems like this creates a blackmail situation.

If the employer had found out from anyone but the person who principally benefited from the images being made, bc it was a public space, that seems fair game.

But getting the images from the ex feels like fruit of the poison tree to me.
June 30, 2025 at 1:28 AM
Which is why they are also attacking public education and universities.

And pushing for a return to child labor.
June 28, 2025 at 11:19 PM
Exactly.
The Dems aren't doing any of this, but the vast majority of them won't risk a damn thing to fight this.

Not even a symbolic vote for what must eventually happen to save the rule of law.
June 28, 2025 at 2:14 AM
And the rich won't have rules written for them to make it easy to bilk the people of NYC. They'll have to work harder to push everyone else down

...in NYC. They still bought Trump so democracy is over at national level
June 26, 2025 at 4:06 PM
They certainly demonstrated a lot more courage than you did this week when you joined Republicans to vote against impeaching the orange menace.

Way to show how hard you won't ever fight for your constituents. Do better.

RFK JR: "All of the foundational assertions are accurate."

Correct response: "That has to be proven, which you did not."
