Kameron Spence - Young Members’ General Seat (21806122) As soon as I started my first local government apprenticeship, I knew UNISON was the union for me. I was welcomed with open arms by my branch and was then elected as branch LGBT+ officer. My young members officer made me feel extremely welcome and since then we have worked together locally, regionally and nationally to help amplify the voices of young members and LGBT+ members together. In that time I have now been elected as Co-Assistant Branch Secretary and it is clearer than ever to me that branches that embrace and support their young members thrive. Unfortunately, within our union, not every young member is supported the same way. Many young members join and never even consider getting more involved, simply because no one has ever asked them too. In some extreme circumstances, they are pushed aside and seen as threatening to some of our longer serving members. Young members shouldn’t be seen as a threat, they should be seen as the future of our union. I recently had the honour of being elected onto the National LGBT+ Committee, and to see so many other young members on it filled me with hope for our union. If you elect me and Tash as your young NEC Reps, not only will you have strong national representation, you will have reps who aren't afraid to stand up to a government no matter the colour of their rosette. Our leaders need to demand UNISON policy, not just ask behind closed doors then post blogs on how amazing the government's budget is! We have leaders that are posing and smiling with politicians that are attacking our Trans siblings. This is not good enough! It is Time for Real Change! Natasha Bednall - Young Members’ Female Seat (21429961) With a strong track record as an activist, I’m confident that I will represent young members in the fight for an organising union which is inclusive and democratic for all of its members. I’m part of the wonderful East Midlands Young Members Forum where, as Industrial Relations Officer, I keep young members informed on campaigns across the region and encourage them to support their local picket line. Our Forum has had the autonomy and support to organise training weekends and develop young activists - I want to see this become the norm across our union. I will always support grassroots activism; I’m proud to be part of Leicester City Branch which recently saw successful strike action taken by support staff at Ash Field Academy. I made sure that this campaign was widely publicised on social media and regularly attended the picket line alongside our inspirational striking workers. We have seen an unforgivable lack of action from the government, whether Labour or Conservative, when it comes to the atrocities committed in Gaza by Israel. I have consistently shown solidarity with Palestine both locally and nationally and believe that we need union leadership that will be vocal on international issues. I’m committed to fighting racism in workplaces and in society, especially given the recent rise of the far right. In January, I joined hundreds of protestors telling Reform UK to get out of Leicester. Let’s stand in solidarity with migrant workers and get Reform out of politics for good. By nominating myself and Kameron for the NEC, you’ll be giving a voice to young members. Young members don’t want tokenism, they want real empowerment. It’s Time for Real Change.
