Today's forestry pic was taken in northeast Washington, east of the town of Chewelah. Trees growing near the creek are mainly subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce. Many of the firs are dying off.

A snag (standing dead tree) reflects off the blue sky-water at Derrynane, Kerry.

In so many ways, dead trees are no less ecologically vital than their living equivalents, providing habitat for a great range of species (called saproxylics).

They're also often very beautiful.
