The atmosphere is a tad unsettled tonight ahead of some approaching low pressure. Here's a look at the #Haleakala #sunset, and an image looking southeast towards the Big Island....

Episode 35 lava fountaining is likely to begin between October 17 and 22, 2025, with the most likely dates being between October 18 and 20.

The onset of episode 35 lava fountaining may occur sooner if rates of inflation and precursory activity increase.

On the right side of the image, hurricane Kiko passing north of the islands, about 400 miles offshore. Hopefully we will get some rain out of it this evening. Image taken this morning from GOES-West satellite.

Heard an Io close by and found them in a hala tree in the yard. Got a few good shots even though the battery in the camera was dead and then would not read the sd card.
The Io holds its foot up, is that a normal posture or are they injured?

The Werauhia sanguinolenta inflorenscense is now almost six feet tall. The camera is level with my eye here. Dwarf Samoan coconut is the background. Sort of like an alien probe.

My Coelogyne "South Carolina" is blooming a second time this month in the Inga tree. Sprays are not large but I am not complaining.

I trekked to the back 40 and used a rise to spy with my binoculars some purple in the avocado tree. I found these five ripening and gathered them. How beautiful is that purple! I believe they are Malama variety, but I will see when they ripen. More on the tree too.

For years I have followed a gardener and garden in Singapore called Min's Garden. She is downsizing after 36 years and her garden is being dispersed to the wind. It will live on in neighbors, friends, hotels, botanic gardens and nurseries, and her new smaller garden. Article here: str.sg/LR5e

So hawt! I know, I am in no place to be complaining. But, it's so hawt. 91 degrees, dry and breezy, sucking the plants and trees dry. You can really see where there is actual soil and where it is just rock or cinder. Hoping for rain soon.

I was privileged to spend a long morning with HIPS members visiting Floribunda Palm Nursery. I had to adjust my preconceived ideas of the nursery and just enjoy the rare and unusual palms and other tropicals.

Bonus while Checking the Perimeter. Last year I found a producing avocado in the "back 40", but was to late to get any. This year I found it with quite a few avos and used my handy picker to grab 3. As I laid them on the ground a splash of yellow in the grass revealed a nice ripe mini pineapple.

What's this in one of my Werauhia sanguinolenta, a birds nest? Nope, nope it's a flower bud. It will get about 5 feet tall when in full flower.

A view of the No Kings protest in Hilo today. Great weather and happy dedicated people. I was surprised by the large percentage of old and very old people in attendance, me included. Glad I went and stood for something.
