I would rather feed 100 people who can feed themselves, if it means 1 person won't starve, than starve 100 people who need my help to prevent 1 person from taking advantage of me.
I've had a brilliant idea.

I'm going to get into Congress and introduce a bill to forgive student loan debt. It will be called the Zeroing Education Loan Debt Accrued Act, aka the ZELDA Act.

The tagline will be: "it's dangerous to go a loan, take this."

If you "simply must watch" a new Harry Potter show, the solution is to fix your heart.

There is not and will never be an entertainment product so compelling and important that it's worth propping up violence against trans people. Even if you do it in a way that doesn't give money to the cause.
I’ve seen a few folks go for the “if you simply must watch that new Harry Potter show just pirate it” and sorry. No. Just no. Just don’t watch it. At all. Ever. Break free of it. It’s time. You’ll be ok. I promise. I know it mattered to you as a kid. Find new things, it’s healthier. Just move on.

Other folks have said it, but let me just note that:

(1) lots of talented, must-read journalists have been let go from their jobs over the last year

(2) millions of Americans are abandoning current media outlets and looking for new alternatives

Seems like a sure-fire business opportunity here?

Trump: *shoots someone with a gun*

Epstein to Maxwell: Trump shot someone with my gun, I was there when it happened.

NYT: Epstein alleges that Trump knew Epstein owned a gun
"House Democrats on Wednesday released emails in which Jeffrey Epstein wrote that President Trump had “spent hours at my house” with one of Epstein’s victims, among other messages that suggested that the convicted sex offender believed Mr. Trump knew more about his abuse than he has acknowledged."

Which is worse: he's so uninformed that he actually believes this, or he just expects US to be so uninformed that we'll believe HIM?
This is what bullies want you to think, and it's why they get stronger

It's exhausting how much effort it now takes to comb through tools for software development in order to make sure they're not built with, for, or in collaboration with generative AI systems.

Today alone I had to reject three different potentially helpful dev tools because they're pro-genAI. 😩

Has anyone asked Mike Godwin how he feels about the GOP basically adopting Godwin's Law as their political platform?

A huge, huge proportion of all techbro startups (not just in AI) can be explained by this sequence of events:

1) someone was lonely
2) they wanted to not be lonely
3) they did not consider trying to meet people in person
4) they did not consider whether their personality was why they were lonely

I definitely agree with this sentiment, but goddamn do I wish we'd achieved this several hundred key turning points ago.

This might be their worst failure yet, but it cannot be overstated how much this is establishment Dems being the same people they've been for at least a decade.
"It may not be much comfort for those bitter about what they see as a needless surrender. But there’s at least a chance that we’ll look back at this moment as a key turning point, one that produced a Democratic Party less willing to live on its knees." — @paulwaldman.bsky.social
Cue the rebellion
The Democratic base is enraged at their party's capitulation — and that's a good thing.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: You can't bring decorum to a gun fight.
Went to repost this and then depressingly saw it was from 8 months ago. This is still true, and I am now convinced it will remain true until there are successful primary challenges nationwide to the "roll over and play dead" Dems.
American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

KURT VONNEGUT - born 103yrs ago today - was the only one to respond.

His reply was a doozy.

The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon

If you were in a military battle and suddenly some of the officers dumped your whole battalion's supply of ammunition in the lake, you would not only be furious but also lose your ability to trust them as leaders. You would expect them to be court martialed, you wouldn't keep following their orders.
The sooner we get past internal recriminations and back to fighting united, the better off we all are — the likelier our victory next November.

Democrats asked voters to weather short term pain from the shutdown to get long term gains in extending the ACA health insurance subsidies. Then they threw it all away. So, what was the point of all ...

In addition: you are more than welcome to block users who don't use tags or labels.

We are given easy ways to grant each other the means to curate their spaces, and it is right and proper to avoid people who don't use them, if that's what you need!
If you don't want to see adult content, BLOCK TAGS. They exist for a reason! Don't like a creator? Block. Don't like certain tags? Block that too. Curate YOUR space for you. Let us filthy degenerates enjoy our smut in peace without you whining you don't like it.

If the logic a system uses to automate any kind of action or decision has less than 99% accuracy, it is still in beta. It is not ready for production.

If it does not provide a manual override for decisions it made in error, it is still in *alpha*. It is not ready for production.

No exceptions.

"Guaranteeing a vote we'll definitely lose is better than not having a vote we'll very definitely lose." - Angus King, 2025

Because, you see, if they have the vote and lose it, the Dems can say "we tried but the mean nasty bad GOP wouldn't let us! whoopsie uh-oh! give us campaign money pwease!"
Angus King: "This initial strategy didn't work. And now we have one. We're gonna have a guaranteed vote on the ACA, and it may not succeed. I grant that. But a reasonable chance -- 10, 20, 30% -- is a lot better than 0% which is where we were."

At this point, I'm not certain any incumbent Democrat Senator should be re-elected.
The model of holding individual senators responsible is broken here. The retirees clearly agreed to take the fall. Which is why the nos should get no credit for voting no unless they move to oust Schumer
