I am very disappointed to find that Larry the Dumpster Cat has no internet presence of any kind, although I also have to respect him for that.

A perfectly composed sentence and a lovely object.

My iPhone 14 “takes” much worse photos than my 12 did due to an insane amount of processing I would never choose—oddcolor/lighting changes, random-seeming focusing. While the mechanics of the newer camera are, I imagine, improved, the more excessive processing leaves me with pixelated, ugly images.

And/or possibly a cooking technique I’m missing out on….

They’re very woody and chewy! I’ve always wondered if they have more heft in a tropical climate or something.

Fun fact: spores from this lovely shroom, Schizophyllum commune occasionally grow in people’s brains, or more often lungs, after being accidentally inhaled.

Yes! Hypholoma lateritium, at one point called “sublateritium” until someone pointed out it wasn’t “sub” anything. It’s possible to confuse it with fasciculare, which is (not deadly) poisonous but fasciculare is noticeably, extremely bitter and usually looks pretty different.

It was many levels of bizarre and full of strange logic like accusing self-immolators of hypocrisy because setting oneself on fire is an act of violence. Just sentence after sentence of this stuff.

I know. I can NEVER find them but I can sure as heck hear them.

Ha. I have an easier time with wisteria than with many other things. A good beginner project for those struggling with moderation!

I haven’t done this but young leaves are sometimes eaten in Japan and allegedly have a chestnut-like flavor. I think key is moderation and young leaves. I do love the flowers and look forward to them as a very spring treat every year!

I eat them every year! They make delightful fritters and I make a beautiful and tasty soda/cordial from them. You don’t want to eat pounds and pounds of them, but they are definitely edible and eaten in various places around the world.

I found it particularly thrilling as someone who is interested in fungi. A lot of our debates about what constitutes a species sort of assume things are more clear-cut in the other kingdoms. And I guess it’s more clear-cut but… also not at all.

Ha. Particularly aggressive rosecomb mutation. This was year before last. I think they were angry about the drought.

Angry pluteus.
