Working on this story lately. Here's Felix and Felicity plotting evil upon their idiot father with one of Felicity's boyfriends.
“My. Goodness,” Cecil said as he slipped onto the terrace. “I leave you alone for a moment, and you’re embracing the son of your sworn enemy.” He sipped one of the two glasses of champagne he held. “I suppose seducing Sir Lyon is part of your plot?” Felix snorted. “Hardly.” He looked down at me. “She’s not my type.” “We were plotting how to embarrass Duke Lyon further,” I said. “Do tell?” Cecil asked as he offered me the other glass. “Felix has been kicked out of every bar in the capital. How could he possibly act in a way that would embarrass the duke?” I took the glass and sized Cecil up. Would his contacts be of any help? Felix answered instead, “I’ve decided to join the Order of Lorelai.” The glass shattered on the ground. Cecil looked down at it, then at his hand as if he couldn’t believe it had betrayed him like that. “I think I misheard.” “You didn’t,” Felix said cheerfully. “Seeing Lady Mortuary make a fool of him made me realize I’ve been doing it all wrong. I’ve been acting within the confines of what he expects. Knights are rowdy. I bet he thought I’d settle down eventually and do what he wants like a good little pawn. I should instead just do what I want. I don’t want to be a knight. I hate swords. I’d rather get sent to a remote village to farm food for the poor. At least then, I’d feel like my early mornings are bettering society rather than just a torture to be endured for a man too stupid to recognize what’s right in front of him.” Cecil covered his eyes with his hand and wheezed a laugh. “Oh. Gods. This is delightful! I’ll help! And the Order of Lorelai isn’t so strict as to keep you from enjoying a drink from time to time.” “I only drink to forget how miserable I am,” Felix admitted. “If I’m not miserable, I do not need to drink.” “Ha, fair point!” Cecil said. “Then here’s to a new life, bereft of misery.” He gestured with his empty hand. I lifted my glass as well.

Hyphokos are requested to disengage.” “Just take the top line wave pattern,” Vathion ordered. “Okay.” Aila paused, then reported, “Scan has been sorted. Check. Refitting contours to pilot. Check. Are we going for a ride?” “Yes,” Vathion said. “Running diagnostics on all systems.” This time, Vathion had to wait nearly a minute as text scrolled up the front screen. “All systems are go. Initiating pilot interface.” For a moment, Vathion sat stunned as the data from Aila’s sensors was directly fed to him through his implants. He knew on an instinctual level that outside his craft, it was exactly sixty-nine degrees. It wasn’t that he was the ship in the same way that he was a physical body, but he knew that his every thought was powerful. Taking a breath to calm his racing heart, he closed his eyes and thought about his engines starting, lifting him off the shuttle bay floor slowly. There was only the slightest sense of movement. He opened his eyes, finding the fighter tipped slightly forward for takeoff. Vathion clutched the arms of his chair. With a thought, he glided his fighter toward the open shuttle bay doors. He paused at the containment shield, then took a breath and slid through it. His sensors registered the shield passing across the skin of his fighter. He was immediately chilled by the sudden temperature change and shivered. “Raise internal temp,” he ordered, teeth chattering. “Alter feedback. Filter that out.”

“But, My Lady!” Weatherly objected, her eyes wide. “That would be social suicide!” “Put it on Duke Owen’s tab,” Reid said. Weatherly stared at Reid, then me, as she realized this was a decision out of her hands. She bowed to Reid, then went to get the dress off the mannequin. “I’ll have to have it taken in some, but if you would like to try it on for a final fitting, we can do that now.” I nodded and followed her to the dressing room, still chuckling to myself. I’m stealing Auntie-dearest’s dress! Oh, the irony! I touched the scar on my cheek as I came to stand in front of the mirror. “I know an excellent makeup artist,” Madam Weatherly said as she hung the dress up.  I considered that as I got undressed and lifted my arms to let the designer wrap a corset around me. She only tightened it enough to cage my breasts and push them up and to the front. Ducking, I let her pull the dress over my head and help me get my arms into the sleeves. “Sure. I guess this will be my debut.” I snorted. “I admit I don’t understand any of it,” Weatherly said. “A decorated war hero was a woman this whole time. Why make it known now?” “Because I don’t want gross old men throwing their daughters at me,” I said and watched as she laced the dress behind me. I ran my hand across the silk bodice. “I’m glad people will get to see this dress. It’s beautiful,” I said, my eye straying to the scar on my shoulder, reminding me of the only other person who knew my real gender. “Even if it is on a pig. I hope that doesn’t bring down your store's reputation.” “Marquessa Flowers’ patronage was already doing that,” Weatherly admitted with a dark expression. “I worry more for your reputation, wearing her dress after everything.” “It’s fine,” I said. “It’s perfect. I don’t want a title. I don’t want to be tied to the capital. If I can get kicked out of High Society on my first night, all the better.”

Reed rested his hand on Lily's hip. "Anything I think of will require money I ain't got. Fancy title hasn't changed my bank account." He finished his wine to wash the taste of defeat out of his mouth. "You've got trees. Surely you can think of something to do with them," Count Tandy said as he joined the conversation. Reed rolled his eyes. "Like what? Hold the pines at knifepoint? Tell em gimme your shang or the sapling gets it?" He stabbed at the air with his empty wineglass. Tandy chuckled. "There's always logging." Reed half-frowned. "What's to stop poachers? I ain't got the people to patrol the whole damn southern border to keep my stupid trees safe. I'd like to keep as much of it forest as I can. Demons ain't the only consequence of human greed." Gwenivar nearly vibrated with excitement. "Oh? And what might that be?" Reed looked down at her. He wasn't sure how to describe global warming in a way that would convey its severity accurately. Looking at his empty wineglass again, he made no move to replace it. "Nah. That's too gross of a topic for a party." "You know about old technology. You mentioned you know about mechanical things," Tandy urged. "I understand that making clocks with sticks isn't possible, but even casual knowledge of the old tech has been very useful in understanding the things we've found." "I can't explain it," Reed objected. Lily spoke up unexpectedly, "He can. He's just embarrassed by how terrible his vocabulary is, regardless of the language he uses." Reed looked down at her with a frown. "Traitor." He shook his head. Tandy and Gwenivar's eyes lit. They turned to Lily like dogs hopeful for a treat. "How much has he told you?" Tandy asked first. Lily laughed softly.

Reed contemplated his latest glass of whisky, turning it slowly to watch the light flicker and refract off the crystal pattern. The rainbows danced across Baron Greene’s bookshelves and his large painting of a farm with a storm rolling in the background. It was late afternoon on a nameless sunny day. Reed decided it was probably a Saturday somewhere. Though more likely it was probably Picking Day or Jumper's Day. He didn't know if it was the fourth week of the first month or what anymore. He couldn't remember how he'd gotten to Baron Greene's house. He had been told he was initially in the hospital and had escaped. He didn't remember that. He only had snatches of memory from the time after nearly dying to a few days ago. He couldn't tell if it was real or hallucination that Lily had been there. Finally, he'd found the strength to roll out of bed, clean himself up, and relocate to Greene's study, where he'd begun to binge drink. Greene had checked on him yesterday and told him that the charity event was a huge success. The baron reported that he'd spoken to Lady Lorraine and tentatively agreed to be allies. However, the final agreement would be up to Reed. He didn't understand why it needed to be his decision. He didn't have the mental energy to ask. He didn't want to think about anything. He was on his third bottle in as many days. Not as much as he could normally put down, but the antibiotics were not mixing well with the whisky. He got drunk faster and threw up almost immediately. He didn't care. Reed knew Lily would've been upset at him if she knew. This was Greene's fault, though. He kept replacing the empties. The Baroness had taken over making sure Reed ate, drank something other than whisky, and took his medications, but her patience was running thin. He couldn’t blame her. She'd lost her son because of him.

I knew that dress at first glance. I'd been forced to look at it multiple times over the last few months when I went to the premier dress shop in town on various dates. It was a gorgeous dress, but... "Who does she think she is?" Caroline gasped. Her hand tightened on my arm, and she practically dragged me in the woman's direction. My gaze went from the woman committing social suicide to Duke Owen as the redheaded duke bent forward, laughing so hard he made no sound. Reid Owen was laughing behind his hand. His sparkling eyes were like emerald forests, and I wanted to fall into them. "Is that the Marquessa's dress?" Caroline asked as we closed the distance. "How shameful." The woman turned and curtsied. It was a clumsy gesture done by someone who hadn't practiced it in over a decade. Whatever Felicity said, I didn't hear it. With the scars dulled to pink discolorations by makeup, I could finally clearly see it. Felicity Lyon stood before me. It... All... made sense now. I couldn't even form words in my head to add to the conversation. Whatever the conversation was, because my ears couldn't make sense of the noises. All this time, Felicity had been right there. No wonder she'd not answered the question in her report. That answer was standing in front of us the whole time. No wonder she was so angry! She was mad enough to spit fire and burn down high society by wearing Aunt Karen's dress to her first ball. Cecil Lambs slipped in, breaking my view of Felicity. "Did I keep you long?" the rake asked Felicity. "I got stopped by a couple of old friends and had to greet them."

"Vathion," a voice called out. He looked back to see Paire, the drama teacher's pet, coming up behind him, the one who had been stuck with the unfortunate role of Ma'Gatas. Paire was nice enough when not provoked, but Vathion was glad that Paire would be graduated and gone in another week. Grinning, he dropped an arm around Vathion's shoulders, which only he could do since they were of comparable height, somewhere around five feet and seven inches. "You did a great job!" Paire's expression was pleasant. His tone was not. They were distant cousins on Vathion's father's side. Paire had no idea. Vathion shook his head slightly. "I think you would have done better. You know I didn't want to do the kiss." Paire removed the amber wig and fluffed his sweaty cyan hair, some of it falling into his sleepy ocean-blue eyes. The stage makeup, simulating Ma’Gatas’s scars, made him look older. He picked at it. "This stuff smells terrible," he muttered, then returned to the topic. "No excuse for dropping her like that." He prodded Vathion's ribs. Vathion squirmed, uncommonly ticklish. "Besides, you look just like him—and do that line so well," Paire concluded. He rolled his eyes. "You're a passable look alike, too, and a senior in the class. I shouldn't have gotten the role." "You've got the hair, though." Vathion shoved his dark violet hair out of his face. He'd had it cut just before the play into the shaggy, slightly wavy mop that Natan had made quite popular. The twin locks framing his Bondstone were the most annoying part about it. "Quite by accident, I assure you," he deadpanned.

Ma'Gatas nodded slightly, his seriousness returning. "I'm sending the files Ha'Natan wanted you to have now." Nodding, Vathion watched as the man's face disappeared and the swirling envelope logo replaced it, meaning it was receiving mail. Jathas whipped his head to look at Vathion. "That's amazing! You get to have the Natan Fleet!" The document finished downloading. Opening it, Vathion shook his head in numb shock. "Not quite the right attitude here, Jath." Just saying it made his eyes water, and Vathion blinked rapidly in an attempt to clear his vision. He couldn't be mad at Jathas, though. Hyphokos could take the memories of a fallen member of their people and absorb them. In essence, the body could die, but Memory Lived On. It was too bad they couldn't do it with Gilons. Jathas' ears drooped as he fell silent. Vathion sniffled and typed in the password to open the protected files, then began to read, eyes widening as it turned out to be the autopsy report on Natan's death. Crushed by a crate in cargo bay four? He wiped his hand across his eyes, coming away wet. "What the hell was he doing there?" Though Vathion had never physically been on the Xarian, he knew the layout of the ship like the back of his hand. Years ago, Natan had given him a video game based on the Natan Fleet so he could pretend to be the admiral. It was his favorite game. Cargo bay four, located directly under the shuttle bay, was used for spare parts. There was nothing interesting at all in there, but the report said he had been found at the beginning of first shift when the crew came in, so it could not have been a late shipment. This didn't make sense.

Hasabi shifted, making the slightly wobbly chair thump on the floor as Vathion skittered across the room to check the oven and ensure dinner wasn't burning. He returned to the door just in time to hear his mother answer, "I know. It's just getting hard to believe you even exist anymore. Natan, I love you, Vathion loves you, but, we're lonely. Can't you come for a day? I need you." Her voice lowered again, "I don't know if I can last much longer without you." "I'll send something," he sounded distraught. "I don't want something! I want you!" "But... I can't just visit. I'd never be able to leave." Vathion jumped slightly as Hasabi slammed her hand on the desk. Hasabi raised her voice, "Then why not take us with you? Vathion's out of school in a week, and I talked to the Dean just the other day. Vathion doesn't need to stay for two more years. He's got all his credits to graduate. He's wasting time here!" Risking getting spotted, Vathion peered around the corner, spying his father sitting with his shoulders slumped, head bowed. "Hasabi, it's dangerous out here..." Natan objected, though not strongly. Surging to her feet and blocking his view, Hasabi shouted, "I don't care! I want to be with you, Natan! That's all I ever wanted! You're playing with our lives! It was risky enough for you to leave back then, but it's been so long... It's starting to wear on me, and I doubt it's done you much good either!"

Solace grumbled and lifted his face from the pillow to speak. "I hate religion. Jade forgot to write that part down. He knew I'd be angry if I found out that he turned me into a... I don't even know what this qualifies as. Worse, he lied. Everything in there is a lie. Yes, I said similar things but wasn’t chastising people because I secretly liked them. I was being malicious!" Solace sighed. "And it isn't like anyone is actually following what I said. Especially Kelvin and his minions. The idea that they're using what I said to justify what they did infuriates me to no end. I had no idea I could be this mad." He forced himself to breathe again. "No. Joining the Temple is the last thing I want to do. If it's a choice between being Crown Prince and being a Priest, I'll take the former." "It isn't a choice between those. You can do anything you want. If you wish to be a farmer, I'll give you a plot of land and anything you need. You may raise pigs if you so desire." Solace stared at the fading golden light peeking through the curtains. The idea of learning how to grow plants was interesting, but he suspected it was a lot of work and his efforts would not benefit anyone. It would merely be a place to stick an unwanted prince. "Maybe... I could be a healer?" he thought out loud. "I'd studied years to perfect that skill... admittedly, it was to make myself far too valuable to send to the battlefield." "You needn't even ask. I will give you whatever resources you need."
