The oligarchs are getting the message that Americans are tired of income inequality, so they will work harder and sneakier to control 2026 elections. We can’t relax.

I want someone to make a version of Faust with Faust played by someone who looks suspiciously like DJT.

Repeat as often as necessary: “ The Republicans shut down the government to preserve tax cuts for billionaires.”

Someone suggested that Hesgeth was planning a coup?

And they may not be allowed to leave until resigning and turning over all IDs and security passes.

Exactly.

Don’t accept a Republican win as inevitable. That’s one of the things they want. If well known Democrats from KC (like the mayor) run against Republican incumbents, they may be able to defeat them since more urban Democrats are now registered in those formerly mostly rural districts.

They are doing those jobs because DOGE cut the number of National Park Service employees who do those jobs from 200 to 20. There’s no one available to do that maintenance.

More “move fast and break things” crap. Remember that at the start of his DOGE project, Musk said that his preferred method would be to cut all government programs and eliminate all government departments and then put back the ones it turned out were useful. Because that was going to be simple.

I turned on our local ABC affiliate and had to turn it off. They are acting like this was a reasonable decision based on solid intelligence, not a temper tantrum by a toddler who is mad his birthday party wasn’t what he expected.

This is insane. The Fourth Estate is derelict of duty.

I listen to old radio broadcasts from the 40s and 50s, and PSAs with these kinds of messages are often included. They promote democracy, citizenship, and diversity. Every time I hear one, I think about the MAGA complaints about “the good old days” and wonder what the MAGA folks are thinking.

Just wait until the House members (like mine) from rural areas—who have been complaining about rural delivery—see what happens next.

It actually was—the techbro definition of efficiency. Humans are by their very nature inefficient. They need to eat and sleep and take breaks. AI and robots are much more efficient. Automate everything, and you have efficiency! And to hell with inefficient actual human needs.

How can the Librarian of *Congress* be fired by the Exec Branch? When DOGE started, I asked a friend who is a librarian at LoC if they felt safe. They did—because they weren’t part of the Exec Branch. Does this mean DOGE could fire anyone working for Congress or the courts?

It looks like you need a KC library card, but if you call the library they can probably help you.

@hcrichardson.bsky.social If you aren’t familiar with Steven Katz’s “The Ethic of Expediency” you need to read it. Substitute “efficiency” for “expediency” and you will see an excellent historical forerunner of the DOGE philosophy.

Time to coin a new word for the digital age: spamotage.

That was Reagan’s actual plan.
May 4, 2025 at 2:51 PM
Shifting the tax burden to the states—This is what people never understood about Reagan’s tax cut plan. When he proposed cuts to federal taxes and spending, he was very clear that it was to move taxing and spending to the state level for more local control. Not to reduce the total taxes folks pay.

The folks I’m talking to are generally Reagan Republicans—not fans of Trump but can’t bring themselves to vote for “liberal” Democrats, so yes—they get the Stalin reference. I seriously wish the Lincoln Project, Kochs, et al would start an American Conservative Party.
