Beau connected Crowder with the force keeping her down. Her good arm was pinned under her trunk, elbow and forearm throbbing. “In my unit,” she finally answered, taking in the stone walls in a quick sweep before finding the nurse’s cautious green eyes. The longer the woman studied her the more Beau doubted her reply. “In the facility.” Nurse Crowder took it. “You had me worried,” she said, helping Beau sit up. “I looked over and you were on the floor. Scared me half to death.” Then she took Beau’s face in her hands and checked for damage. “Do you feel dizzy at all?” Automatically she shook her head; the gesture didn’t quite work with someone holding her face. “No, ma’am.” Beau didn’t remember falling. That scared her. Healthy people didn’t get blips in their memory.

Two assistants directed a gurney through the foyer, coming in from Beau’s left. That was normal; they operated in pairs. The restraints weren’t. With wrists and ankles anchored down—soft restraints, Dr. Blythe called them—the person being transported remained motionless as they wheeled her into an adjacent unit. Another tick against routine. Others rolled in during the day, when the lights were on. Hadn’t seen many, true, yet the break from her temporary normal stoked Beau’s interest. And concern. Flaring her nose in reflex, wanting as much information she could gather while knowing scent was a moot point with thick glass between them, Beau padded to the window for a better look. A bit older than her. Reddish brown, close-cut hair. Besides a neck monitor, she was dressed in a plain shirt and trousers, rousing a small, jealous part in Beau. It withered nearly as soon as it sprouted once she spotted the scar on the side of her head. Her stomach sank; another skinner victim? Not a recent one, if so. Too old a wound.

Not so fun fact: this particular breakup culminated in said ex's brother getting 🤏 close to shoving Beau's face into a fish tank of flesh-eating beetles and that's all the context I'll share (for now!)

It took maybe five seconds to realize her head had stopped moving downward. The pressure remained, thus she kept pushing back, leading to a stalemate in stamping her death certificate. If she hadn’t locked her knees, Beau might have collapsed. She half-expected urine down her leg; small mercies when her body kept the barest composure from total humiliation. “I hate seeing my sister cry,” Alfie said, fingers flexing around the curve of Beau’s skull. Beau chanced a fleeting glance to where she last saw Ulrikke. The Warden’s right-hand stood at attention, face tight, subtle pinch in her brow alluding to something Beau couldn’t quite read. When their eyes met, Ulrikke’s expression slipped into disdain.

Beau moved her phone to the coffee table so Essie could sit beside her. “Up to five now. Ben still ain’t there—I’m taking that as a good sign.” She made a noise between a laugh and scoff, running a hand down her face. “They’re more scared of missing class than turning into vampires.”

An alien sensation crept up her spine, prickling her skin into goosebumps. The quiver unable to take hold in her muscles migrated to her breath, turning it shallow and shaky. Urshunds were not prey animals. No constant head swivel through life for evading threats and danger since, really, Adah was the danger to deer and rabbits or any other cute fluffy woodland creature. Laying on that table, part of her wanted to beg forgiveness from every bunny she had ever chased.

“It’s fascinating you’re metabolizing the tranquilizer so quickly,” Ahlgren continued. She lined up a blade next to a pair of bent shears. Adah made a weak noise in her throat meant to be a growl; make this human have second thoughts about touching her with any of her chosen tools, bare her teeth and bite off a few fingers if she didn’t heed the warning. It ended in a grunt. A twitch of her lips. Fuck. “None of our other subjects have had such a reaction, though it may cause issues with anesthesia later on. I’m interested to see if your quick recovery has anything to do with your regenerative properties.”

“You’re fine with me borrowing your car?” Beau asked once more before they headed into the evening chill. “So long as you wear your seatbelt,” Essie confirmed, kneeling to lace up her sneakers, “because I really don’t want to get a call from the ER saying you wrecked and went through the windshield.” “You know they didn’t have seatbelts when I was growing up.” “Yeah, and you know the odds of girlfriend-through-windshield aren’t zero.” Standing, she hoisted the duffle strap back on. “Be safe goes both ways, memaw.”

God was a woman. God was coming toward her. Beau tensed. Easy confidence in each step, the new woman was tall, slightly taller than Beau when she wasn’t restrained to a gurney, rectangular features accentuated with the beginnings of laugh lines and crows feet. She had her long, sandy brown hair loosely tied back and swept over one shoulder in a similar way Aunt Della liked hers. What stood out most to Beaumont was how the woman dressed underneath the white coat: black slacks and a blue button-down, reminding her of Lou’s preferred style. That alone melted some of the ice clawing into her stomach. Not entirely like her family, but perhaps alike in another way, smaller way. It redirected her focus long enough the woman was folding the blanket back before Beau had time for reaction or protest.

“I have to go.” She braced against the pressure, too set in her plan to alter course. Heart beating, lungs breathing, brain thinking…Beau was fine. They couldn’t keep her if she wanted to leave. “And I promise you, you will, but you’re in no condition to leave just yet.” A subjective inference from Beau’s perspective, but thoroughly objective as far as Dr. Ahlgren and her assistants were concerned. “You can’t make me stay—I’m eighteen, I’m an adult!” “And a danger to yourself in this state.”

The undead reached into its hoodie pocket. Beau braced, moving fully into the line of fire. This was going to suck— It stopped. Held out an envelope in its shaky hand. “Pleeeaase,” the dead thing wheezed in rattling mess of a voice, “R…S…V…P.” The tension in the room fizzled like a dud firework. Beau shed her defenses. “Beg pardon?” Out of caution, she stayed where she was, both for Essie’s and her own sake. At the counter, Joel’s dead person had extended its own invitation, gurgling in a way Beau realized meant its bottom jaw was absent. Joel, too, was experiencing the same level of bewilderment, fangs and claws replaced by a tilted head and raised eyebrow. She stared at the ghoul. It stared back, unblinking. Unable to blink. Waiting with the patience of all the time in the world, since time meant nothing to death.

It brought to mind the B-grade horror flicks Essie collected, being a child of the 80s when one couldn’t go to a theater without passing a poster for the latest creature feature or slasher installment. Although, in those circumstances the terror was presented in a controlled setting, with the understanding everything on-screen was artificial, i.e. the blood was cornstarch, the creatures were faux fur and circuitry, the body parts were all silicone, and the victims hit marks and practiced their final screams. Essie recalled the haunted house last October; Beau’s reaction had been genuine. Today, her partner’s hands had trembled as she handed the box to her. She had a feeling she was about to learn why.

“I could always lean into the rebel thing they think I have going on. Go big or go home, right?” Beau fully accepted the irony of using the phrase as someone with anxiety rivaling that of a cheetah. Even had the service dog and everything. Just so happened said service dog was the church grim sprawled out and dead asleep on the bed. She tossed a couple shirt options down next to him, getting a back foot twitch in response but nothing else. How she envied being able to sleep so soundly. “Essie did not like being dragged off by Timmy Tibia. Essie does not want to be dragged off by Timmy Tibia again,” her partner said flatly without looking up from the bag. “You and me both,” Beau agreed. Absently, she rubbed at one of her wrists. Shoes, pants, belt, shirts…did she need jewelry? She studied her reflection in the hanging mirror on the door. It wouldn’t hurt. At least change out her studs. And take the chance to wear her rings; her day profession prohibited their wear as a working hazard.

We'll have to wait and see how well your lung and airway recover." "Speaking of which," Dr. Ahlgren interposed, checking her wristwatch, "let's take a look at your dressings; we can continue while we change them for the evening."

Footfalls behind her. Heavy boots. She rolled onto her side; a figure dressed in black chambered another round in a hunting rifle. Not dressed in black—all black. A shadow. An outline, a wraith of a person. Yet the gun and the pain were so, so real. Get to safety. It drove her forward, pulling herself along the floor with elbows and knees, unable to lift more than a few inches off the ground. Get to Aunt Della. Get to safety. Blood welled into her throat. A boot stomped down on her calf, pinning her in place. Beau’s heart nearly stopped. “Wait, wait, wait, please!” The sound of her own gargled voice sent a new wave of panic down her spine. “Please, don’t—Aunt Della! Aunt Della, help—"

“I was just checking on Adah when I heard the page,” a new voice said, efficiently outnumbering Beau now four-to-one. When she opened her eyes, a new face greeted her. A third human, slightly younger than Dr. Ahlgren, average height, wearing a matching white coat over a vibrant yellow collard blouse and a pair of black-rimmed glasses. Her blonde curls were bobbed short and styled professionally. Unlike the other two women, she wore a touch of rouge on her cheeks and a subtle mascara on her upper lashes. She reminded Beau of the ladies in the bigger cities, where they weren’t used to getting their hands dirty.

But don’t worry about that, now, we have multiple systems for financial assistance. Our aim is to get you well, not leave you destitute.” “We have a PO box—will that be okay?” Dr. Ahlgren chuckled, amused. “So long as you remember it.” “Box nineteen, at the post office on Main and First street.”

Beaumont Ivarson never wanted a high-profile job. She had her bakery, her friends, and her partner all safe and protected in their corner of Queensreach. Yet, as it so often does for those who wish harder than anything for it not to be so, life had other ideas. Such as Beau taking over as Warden of the city. After killing her predecessor. To be honest, though? Alfie had it coming. Now, keeping the supernatural community hidden under the eyes of Queensreach's human citizens falls on her shoulders. Sometimes you burn a few biscuits, a few bridges, and despite your best efforts that bad taste comes back to haunt you. Winter draws on. Shop orders and ghosts from the past creep closer. All of this, and Beau and her girlfriend Essie haven't even finished moving into their new place, yet. It’s going to be a hell of a housewarming party.

Scowling at the pair, Essie dropped down to Beau’s level, close enough her words were clear. “Beau, look at me. You’re good—c’mon.” Something in those words finally snapped her free. Essie helped haul her to her feet, thankful Beau remembered how her legs worked, and hastily directed them to indicated exit. Being a full head shorter, putting herself between Beau and the scene did little to block much of the gore; a sudden spur of crisis-induced ingenuity had her yank Beau’s beanie down over her eyes.
