3D printing all the things
I did not expect the print head to agree that the warped first attempt was junk and try to take it to the waste chute when I paused the print.
Sometimes you just need a brim when #3Dprinting stuff.

#FilamentFriday thoughts are really about Saturday. I can't march due to health issues. My role must be that of a supporter, a cheerleader, a cleric, a bard. So I shall print things that will hopefully bring joy to others, so that when they take a break they can also recharge for another round.

On all the "[#] steps to fascism" lists I've seen, at least 80% of them have happened recently in the US.
If you live outside the US: Do not go to that country while its fascist government is in power.
If you live in the US: GTFO if you can.

First I've heard of this idea, but I like it.
Activities for the day could include music, reading, donating books, and the movie of the day.

#3dprinted on #FilamentFriday, stuff I did not expect to print when I bought the silk copper filament:
Copper pipes for tabletop miniature games.

#FilamentFriday and I'm test-printing some tabletop game scenery tiles.
"Silver" filament is *sometimes* metallic, depending on brand! Thus it took 9 tries to figure out optimum settings for these.
2 brands of filament, 3 layer heights, ~80min per tile.

#WIPWednesday looks like it's #3dprinting donuts.

They're chess pieces.
September 18, 2025 at 1:18 AM
#WTFWednesday in #3Dprinting is when your filament is so under extruded that it leaves a nice pattern.
(The WTF is because it looked fine on previous horizontal pieces. Concerned I might have a partial clog or some other problem developing. Swapping filament for the next print!)

#SlicerSaturday brings us a #BambuStudio puzzle.
I sliced this to see what the coverage would look like, expecting a bunch of Normal supports mixed in with some trees: that's what Hybrid mode uses, in theory.
I'd love to know why the biggest flat section of the entire model gets no supports at all.

Important: This applies to everyone using Canva to generate book covers and ad copy or images, too.

Even if the primary text is written by a person.

the tl;dr: The goal of generative AI is to steal.

Definitely an #Iwannasingthis piece. I think it's 5-part stuff, with this being from the Contralto book; middle C is on the middle bar. This is 26r.

#MondayMagic is watching the #3Dprinting of the pretty layer of tile on the big piece.
(Warning: The video has sound. It's mostly the fans hissing.)

Happy #NationalCreativityDay on this #FilamentFriday.
Today I'm working on new pieces from Sacrusmundus, using the BambuLab Slicer to "paint" on the model to show which filaments to use where. I love using different filament colors to create "pre-painted" scenery pieces.

#MaintenanceMonday had an unexpected task: replacing the PTFE tube inside the printer. Turns out the segment inside the printer rubs up against the top glass and wears out. Yay for YouTube how-to videos.
The cord protector had a segment detachment. Dunno how it happened, but I got it reconnected.

#FilamentFriday print check while on the road. AMS FTW.
Also: printing filament chips and display boards makes color planning sooooo much easier. Wish I’d done it sooner!

Current view out the office window. Contrast this to the dust storm pix from earlier.

View out the office window of the northern Illinois #DustStorm. This is looking west. The edge wasn't real photogenic; we smelled this before we got the weather warning about it.
This is nowhere near as bad as some folks have been getting, and I can't imagine trying to breathe this stuff outdoors.

#FilamentFriday is downloading a new temp/speed tower, printing it, looking at the results and saying "I can't tell the difference...."
Meanwhile, an odd sort of #First for me: I'm in a dust storm.
Western suburbs of Chicago, got this on the phone. "Ah, so that's what I'm smelling: dust!"

#FilamentFriday has me trying to respool some badly-twisted PETG.
Sometimes a tangle is ephemeral and moving a loop or two gets rid of it.
This time, the main line is buried beneath two lines, each of which is also crossed by a different line or two.
After respoolling an inch, I gave up and cut it.

#WTFWednesday is the #3Dprinting giggle of the week. The one on the right moved. The air-printing segments ended at the two on the left. Meet Sally, Hari, Gracie, and FlatTop.

Also, happy #WorldBookDay. Time to tackle that TBR pile! :)
April 24, 2025 at 1:17 AM
This #3Dprinting job was a #WTFWednesday fail. Then I remembered that it is *not* a high-speed PLA, but a "tough" PLA+. Hazard of having to respool the stuff and forgetting to label it.
Reduced speed by 50% = print success.
(Also illustrates why one should always check the start of a print.)

#TwoForTuesday reasons why I bought a roll of PETG-CF specifically for #3Dprinting spools for filament refills: Most cardboard spools get damaged in packing & shipping, and can't be used in the AMS. PETG-CF has a wider temp tolerance range than PETG and PLA.
This is spool #5.

I knew that telling BambuStudio to slice an STL with 11.2 million triangles would spike the CPU percentage.
I did not expect it to go over 100.
Thought: #3Dprinting in hyperspace? I mean, it *is* probably using matrix algebra of many dimensions......
April 1, 2025 at 12:19 AM
New steps to be added to the pre- #3Dprinting protocols:
Click the Device tab, click the Play button to turn the video feed on, make sure there's nothing on the plate.
*Then* click Print Plate.
Pic because the pattern looks kinda cool at this stage. It's part of a can dispenser for a pantry.
March 30, 2025 at 4:38 PM
Huzzah, a successful print that's more than 2" tall!
Probable cause of many previous #3Dprinting failures with this filament: dirt in the spool led to blobs on the print, then spaghetti.
I rewound the filament onto a new spool, re-dried it, re-calibrated it, etc. before daring this larger print.
