In my old life I'd be gearing up for the Prince Harry phone hacking trial this week. I don't think people have clocked this is potentially the peak of20+ years of phone hacking cases.

So a quick thread of the issues (and if you're a broadcaster who needs someone to do a turn explaining this, DM.)

The generation which thought media studies was some snowflaky fad is persistently conned by the media it consumes, weird
we should be concerned about the impacts of social media on kids and teens, but i don’t think we’re worried nearly enough about what it’s doing to middle aged people and seniors

You have to wonder if those miners would have been treated so cruelly if they weren't migrants, or if South Africa's abiding xenophobia is once again at play.

South Africa accused of 'horrific' crackdown as 78 corpses pulled from besieged mine
A total of 78 bodies and 166 survivors - some of them emaciated and disorientated - have been hauled out so far in a court-ordered rescue operation, with hundreds more men still stuck 2 km (1.5 miles) below the surface in a gold mine at Stilfontein, southwest of Johannesburg.

Make no mistake. Every politician, pundit & online grifter amplifying Musk's dangerous lies will be aware of this intervention by now. Make no mistake, they are choosing to mislead the public & politicise the suffering of victims in the shameful pursuit of political advantage, attention & clicks.

Perhaps the least encouraging words in the English language: "The President has been watching right-wing Youtube".
1. Why did Yoon declare martial law? This is likely the question on everyone’s mind. And the answer, encapsulated in Oxford's 2024 Word of the Year, “brain rot”, might surprise you.

I decided to give ChatGPT a try, to see what all the fuss is about. Its responses were staggeringly vivid and realistic.

But there was something slightly off too. The uncanny valley of prose. I couldn't put my finger on it until I read this passage from Soul Music (Terry Pratchett, Discworld #16).

Trump says RFK Jr will “investigate” the link between vaccines and autism as “somebody needs to find out.”

We’ve ALREADY FOUND OUT
- >600,000 kids in Denmark
- >90,000 in the US
- >1.2m kids worldwide

NO LINK.

How many more of these does he want us to do?

I lie awake at night thinking about this.

In 100 years, the knowledge people can access will mostly be from the Global North. It will be as though scholarship from most of the Global South – unless published in US, UK, or European journals – did not exist. 1/n
