You can’t always fake the real thing… especially when it comes to Irish sausage rolls. Mine split wide open in the oven, but someday I’ll be in Northern Ireland with a hot, flaky roll from a petrol station in hand. Until then, I’ll keep dreaming (and eating the broken ones).

With my trusty schedule, I sit down on the weekend, plan it all out, and put it in stone. Everyone knows what’s coming, so there are no daily surprise reveals (or fights). I even sneak in family favorites, my daughter’s parmesan pasta with broccoli, my husband’s pork tenderloin so there’s always something on the horizon to look forward to. The rest of the dinners get filled in based on what’s hanging around in the fridge, what’s on sale at Kroger or Aldi, or what desperately needs to be used up before it grows legs and walks away.

You know how you walk into a house that's for sale and it feels like it’s been frozen in time? You can almost hear the Hootie & The Blowfish playing from the '90s kitchen. And if you’ve ever walked into a house from that decade, you've definitely run into that angled closet trend. You know the one, right? Instead of a nice, straight wall, the closet is cut on a diagonal, just jutting out into the room like it’s trying to be amazing. Bless its heart, it was trying! At the time, it was considered “custom” and “modern,” but let’s be honest… today, it just feels kinda stupid. In reality, those corner closets gobble up valuable square footage, make furniture placement a total nightmare, and can actually make a room feel smaller. It's no wonder this great forever home is still sitting on the market.

If you grew up in the 90s, chances are you remember Italian dressing chicken. It wasn’t just a recipe; it was practically the way to cook chicken. Italian dressing chicken was everywhere. It showed up in church cookbooks, family recipe boxes, and food magazines. Kraft and Wish-Bone commercials practically declared it the answer to the eternal “what’s for dinner?” question. And my mother loved it, dumped a bottle of dressing over some chicken breasts, popped it in the oven, and dinner was done. I would beg for Kraft “Zesty” Italian dressing, because it was the best in my book. When I was out of college and had enough money to actually buy chicken breasts, I would marinate it in Zesty Italian dressing and grilled it. Somewhere around 2000, I decided that was not cool and switched to soy, garlic, and honey, or teriyaki as the preferred marinade and forgot all about that old way.

To set the vibe, I’m going with a moody deep gray-blue on the walls. Most of the house will be light and airy, but every home needs at least one or two spaces with a little drama, especially if its main job is fun and hanging out. Music will be everywhere in here. If you know our family, music is central to who we are. We are never without music playing in our house. To honor our true essence: Picture this- a piano to the right of the fireplace, a vintage record player, old school stereo, and stacks of vinyl to the left. Guitars, harmonicas, tambourines, and a bongo (because why not?) scattered about, just waiting to be picked up.
