Spent today in Atlanta, GA reporting…can’t wait to tell this story for our Appalachian Mid-South network.

And yes because I’m a reporter — I’m bringing the receipt. I’m not rich, I have a public radio salary after all, but it’s the least I could do.

And I will carry that PRE tote bag around proudly.

At the bottom of the tool, check out this option to get our data. You can download every single House or Senate floor vote in a structured data format of either CSV or JSON.

If you notice any cool trends in there, let us know!

Kentucky has applied for FEMA assistance after the outbreak of roughly half a dozen tornados last weekend. PA = public assistance and reimburses local governments, IA = FEMA grants to households to help replace items and rebuild, etc.

This is a radar scan that measures rotation. Just a minute ago, it shows a line of storms that looks brief but is headed right for the Somerset/London areas, the same areas that were hit hard Friday night.

In this segment, you’ll hear part of the conversation I had with Jake Cutchens as the sun set yesterday on a decimated neighborhood.

“This is Appalachia’s heart right here,” he said, talking about the people that helped them sort debris throughout the day.

I'm clearing off some SD cards to make room for photos of the Kentucky Derby today for @kentuckypublicradio.org / @lpm.org / @npr.org .

Going through photos from the past 6 months or so brings back memories of some beautiful adventures in Kentucky and Indiana.

A little ironic considering Zoeller makes pumps. Specifically, the sump pumps that will be running in most of our basements this week.

I thought this hearing might have more specific details or conversation about money for flood recovery, but honestly it was just vibes. Two senators riffing on what they've heard and seen in eastern KY after recent severe flooding.

Flood cleanup and recovery in Perry County, KY today as weather warmed a bit and roads improve. Still no FEMA disaster declaration.

Multiple people told me today: “Look around. If this isn’t a disaster I don’t know what is.”

Kentucky flooding death toll continues to rise. Meanwhile people are trying to clean up mud as fast as possible before snow comes Tuesday night and makes travel conditions even worse.

Fleming-Neon, KY is flooding once again. Got this today from a source in the downtown area which was gutted in 2022.

I wish the ice in Louisville would thaw as quick as that funding freeze.

A Head Start program in Louisville at the Family and Children's Place is having trouble accessing their federal funding portal.

"...we are having trouble accessing the portal and have had trouble all day."

But Q/A sheet from OMB says Head Start should not be frozen by the new directive.

Each year a bill gets filed to reverse this and put Kentucky's law on black lung diagnosis eligibility in line just about all the other states. It never goes anywhere.

That bill was just filed again yesterday by Ashley Tackett Lafferty, the only D state house legislator left in eastern KY.

Last summer we told you about a group of Red River Gorge climbers trying to get state law changed to help them easily access private cliffs.

Now it's here: House Bill 114 was just filed in Kentucky.

Learn more about what prompted the bill: www.lpm.org/news/2024-08...

As the KY legislative season kicks off, J Hodgson filed a bill that proposes creating a state-sponsored disaster-response volunteer corps a la national guard. A really interesting idea...do any other states have something like this currently going?
