Highlight for me in the past week was finding a species of globular springtail that I've always dreamed of seeing! Vesicephalus occidentalis, probably the most beautiful glob in the PNW! They seem to love the cold and wet winter weather.

Time for some Jumping spiders! Salticids are probably my favourite taxa and photography subjects; so incredibly diverse and so much personality! I believe they can cure arachnophobia with how cute they are. Starting this thread off with a Simaethula sp. from Australia!

SO glad people are enjoying the macro photos! I'll be sharing more in the coming days! For now you can see my favourite photos on my instagram (jchan.photo) and on iNaturalist! (justinchans)

And of course they also make such amazing and charismatic photo subjects! Starting from the left: Undescribed Ptenothrix sp., Sminthurinus henshawi, Fungus infected Ptenothrix, Ptenothrix beta
November 12, 2024 at 1:12 AM
It's also been fun to get some of the first species records up on iNaturalist. Some of these are incredibly abundant, but there's just not many people out there looking for >0.5mm critters. From left to right: Sminthurinus lawrencei, Pygmarrhopalites bellingeri, Arrhopalites diversus

huge highlight from the past year was discovering a brand new colour form of Dicyrtoma hageni: forma canadensis, and having my photographs used in documentation
November 12, 2024 at 12:57 AM
Pretty much exactly a year ago I found and photographed my first globular springtail, and since then I've been completely obsessed. I've photographed over 800 springtail individuals now, and there's still so much out there to discover! This one is about 2mm, and is one of many undescribed species
