This report outlined how to close the jail in 18-24 months. Join us on April 1st at the board to demand #NoMoreDelay, #CloseMCJ!

TLDR: This is great news for Angelenos!
May 17, 2023 at 4:27 PM
Right now, 50% of people in LA County jails are pretrial, many of whom can’t afford to pay bail. We are hopeful that Judge Riff’s ruling will push the County to take seriously the crisis of pretrial detention.
May 17, 2023 at 4:27 PM
LA County and LA City put up no defense to the enforcement of the money bail schedule. The defendants seemingly don’t believe it works either, yet they have failed to expand the initiatives grounded in pretrial release and not supervision.
May 17, 2023 at 4:26 PM
In addition to the LA system being unconstitutional, money bail just doesn't "work". The judge’s decision cites numerous studies and evidence that this cruel practice actually increases the likelihood of someone being rearrested.
May 17, 2023 at 4:25 PM
This ruling follows a months-long preliminary injunction hearing, which included weeks of testimony from pretrial experts on the harms of wealth-based detention. This is a huge win for working-class Angelenos.
May 17, 2023 at 4:24 PM
💥BREAKING VICTORY💥: LA Superior Court Judge Lawrence Riff found it unconstitutional for LA County and City of LA to jail people between arrest and their first court date simply because they couldn’t afford bail. (🧵tldr at the end)
