A healthy higher education system depends not only on producing employable graduates but also on cultivating citizens and leaders who can interpret uncertainty, question assumptions and connect ideas across disciplines.
Judging colleges by how they teach vocational skills misses the point, argues an engineering professor.

The skills employers need most include initiative, critical thinking, navigating ambiguity, and more – and those come from blending humanities and STEM. buff.ly/FWQuzll
Colleges teach the most valuable career skills when they don’t stick narrowly to preprofessional education
Parents and policymakers want job security for graduates, but in the AI and automation era, careers may depend as much on curiosity and initiative as on credentials.

"Meurseult is condemned for his indifference, for not crying at his mother’s death, because he has an extramarital relationship and is an atheist. All this clashes with the values of European colonial society and this is why he is condemned. L’Étranger isn’t an anti-colonialist manifesto..."

Those who agree with Manguel that “Unpacking books is a revelatory activity” are lonely without this crowd of paper bodies; they understand how the cover is a flesh, the binding a nervous system, the chapters as organs, sentences veins, and the words the very blood that circulates meaning.

Loving one’s work is wonderful, but it’s also perfectly human to value stability, recognition or family needs. In a culture where “do what you love” has become a moral commandment, remembering that it’s not the be-all, end-all reason to work may be the most moral stance of all.
Loving your work can be great, but judging whether others love their work isn’t.

When passion becomes a standard, employees who do their work for stability or family needs can be unfairly judged or overlooked. buff.ly/dzkpMMZ
Treating love for work like a virtue can backfire on employees and teams
