Gardener and reader interested in Oklahoma native plants and the bugs that live with them. I live in the northern Cross Timbers ecoregion, USDA zone 7B.
Yes, they migrate to Mexico every year.

It's cypress vines. They're not native and I usually pull most of them when they come up but this was a lazy year for me in the garden.

I'm pretty sure that once the tail broke he couldn't steer it at all.

Aka Blister beetle. Definitely don't touch that one. 😉

This summer had a lot of rain compared to normal years. I'm not sure what would have caused it.

I think there are 9 species, but this is the only annual one. I have C. bushii as well, but only a few plants.

But to actually answer your question, it wouldn't shade out the Bermuda grass enough to kill it.

Getting rid of Bermuda is a dream of mine, or nightmare, maybe. I have the beds edged and mostly keep it out, but flowers are always getting in the (backyard) grass and sometimes I let them stay.

I've realized that a lot of natives will grow in Bermuda if you don't mind long grass in your flowers.

I don't know, but they would probably do fine if you didn't mow them. They are planted in a bed, they just seeded themselves on the ground.

I use a Samsung A9 8.7 inch tablet. It's their basic kids tablet and they are about $125, but I don't know if you could put it in your pocket.

I buy singles at native plant sales so I can save seeds from them later. It's really the only way I know to buy seeds from local ecotype plants around here, otherwise you have to find seeds in the wild or trade for them. Also, I'm a cheapskate.

I kniw we have tree frogs here because I hear them at night, but I have never seen one.

I think it's black nightshade. I have it, too.

Possibly Butterfly Milkweed, Asclepias tuberosa.
