Zoology correspondent. Author. Chatty man. BBC Radio 4 / Guardian. 'Infinite Life' / 'Martian Museum of Earth Animals' and more (did i tell you about my duck genitalia VR app?).
Have often written about my feeling that urban parts of London (and all cities) have the potential to become a lifeline for amphibians (just add a pond) so I was pleased that the universe manifested this frog at the top of Wembley Way. Happy, healthy and in good health. Put a skip (hop) in my step!

MONEY (SPIDERS) MAKE THE WORLD GO AROUND. The dewdrops from this nice October mist we're having have brought out the little web-gardens of the money spider Lepthyphantes tenuis (mostly, l think).

Thousands. Ridiculously abundant. You probably past about a million on your commute today. Say hi!

Mmmmm.... doughnuts. (Silk-button galls <--- so heavy with them that the autumn leaf hit the floor with an audible clunk!). #autumn

Fell of my chair seeing this today so thought I should share.
This is a little snippet of the longer review of CHOOSE YOUR OWN EVOLUTION in today's edition of The Times. (That line at the end is from the story where the reader ends up evolving into a human being).

Over the moon to see that MEGA is on the longlist for the #WainwrightPrize, announced today. A real team effort, five years in the making.

So many great books on the list (many written by friends - hello! and also congrats! - and people I respect a great deal). Delighted to be among them.

Here in the East Midlands we don't really get proper stag beetles, but we get these cute chunks, the lesser stag beetles. Their grubs need wood that's been pulped up by fungi, just like more-er stag beetles. But they live for 2 years as grubs... not up to 7 years. Just a bit more sensible all round.

Happy PAPERBACK publication day to this precious book/egg! (in the UK).

It’s been a really satisfying year for ‘Infinite Life’ - a Book of the Year in The Telegraph, BBC Wildlife Magazine and Geographical. I have just been so blown away by people’s responses and emails in this last year...

Oh come on. COME ON. Ozzy is too much. It's not fair on other dogs that he exists.

Oxyporus populinus. Its spores got into the tree through the wound that you can see here. Then the mycelium did its thing and then sprouted fruits on the brow of the wound. Still learning my fungi so corrections welcome!

SNEAK PEEK! Just to say that the paperback release of Infinite Life is coming next month (8th of May). Gorgeous, eh?

This was a Book of the Year in the Telegraph, BBC Wildlife, Geographic... Some really nice foreign editions coming too. Thanks for the cover quote @profaliceroberts.bsky.social! x

Seen many toadballs in my life but was surprised to see a terrestrial toadball today. Female is somewhere in the middle. This happens because of a skewed sex ratio at the pond. These are pretty young males. I chose to put them back in water because I was worried about someone treading on them!

Thanks to The Atlantic pushing on this, authors can now see which of their works have been taken, without any permission or consent, by Meta. They have taken 11 of my books, according to The Atlantic. To think, people (and govs) venerate these billionaire companies. Other authors, how you feeling?

Back from @niscifest.bsky.social (where events continue this week). Great fun! Lots of shows, lorra zoology chat. A privilege. A big highlight was on-staging with @flygirlnhm.bsky.social and hearing about Buster Gonad cricket genitalia among many other topics of important educational filth.

This non-fic epic extravaganza, five years in the making, stomps into bookshops today. Such amazing illustrations and scene constructions by Gavin Scott! Can't wait for young audiences to be totally wowed and, I hope, inspired.

Let me know if you spot it in the wild!

Have a MEGA day x
