Earthquake scientist; read my earthquake newsletter: earthquakeinsights.substack.com. Visiting Asst Prof @CornellEAS; prev @ EOS_SG, Caltech, Harvard. Mom (x3). Local elected official! I also post pictures of my foster kittens.
I do not have any insider knowledge, but I believe that the event was entirely synthetic and came from the ShakeAlert system rather than anything associated with UNR. This is the message on the USGS site:

This year, the NSF funded 35% fewer grants in geoscience, with 25% less money. Meanwhile, the Office of the Director spent almost three times as much money as in a regular year.

This morning, a M6 earthquake struck at ~70 km depth near Anchorage, Alaska.

Earthquakes are a regular part of life here: this is a subduction zone, with earthquakes deepening east to west. M6 earthquakes fall well within the range of "normal".

Earthquake Insights is making *almost* $20k a year - which is simultaneously more than I ever thought it would make, and not nearly enough to raise a family.

On average, we have about 40 free subscribers for every one paid subscriber. We love that we reach so many people! Many of our readers come from countries where a paid subscription is simply out of reach - places like Syria, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Your support would make a real difference.

I got elected! (I was unopposed, so it wasn't entirely surprising, but anyway...) Looking forward to serving on the Tompkins County Legislature. Thank you so much to the people who donated, and those who voted. ❤️

Since you probably don’t have four week old foster kittens, I will share this one with you.

Yesterday, thirty-two people donated $1710 to help the Museum of the Earth keep its doors open. 🥰

If you donate (at least $20), let me know and I will send you a 50% off coupon for a year's subscription to Earthquake Insights. Since that's usually $80, you can help the museum AND save money!

Going up! Twelve people have donated over seven hundred dollars since this morning. ❤️

Sixty days left to save the Museum of the Earth. Please donate if you can, and share.

This is not only one of the most important fossil collections in the world, it also home to the world’s best plushies: Paleozoic Pals!

And rather remarkably similar to the M7.5 in August! They plot directly on top of each other, with almost identical focal mechanisms and very similar magnitudes. Curious...

A M5.0 earthquake struck below the Sea of Marmara (Türkiye) yesterday, a little west of April's M6.2. Was this an aftershock? What does it mean for hazard? We have added a map and short discussion to our previous post, and removed the paywall. ⚒️ 🧪

Thanks! Do you have a reference for the debate? It should be possible to determine the slip direction on the megathrust using the slip vectors from the thrust events - like in this figure from Bradley et al. (2016) for Sumatra. Maybe the uncertainty comes from the movement of the Australian Plate?

Earthquake Insights now has >6500 subscribers, from 126 countries!

It feels pretty special, as an earthquake scientist, to be able to connect with people almost everywhere that earthquakes have an impact - including hard-to-reach countries like Myanmar, Afghanistan, Syria, and Kyrgyzstan.
